Yu Dafu recalled his depression at that time in his autobiographical prose "Snowy Night". That year, Yu Dafu was twenty years old. Xu Zhimo, Yu Dafu's middle school classmate, was no stranger to whoring either. He himself disclosed that he had done it twice, and that was during the period when he was married to Lu Xiaoman, a talented woman in the Republic of China. On June 25, 1931, Xu Zhimo, who had left home to teach at Peking University at the invitation of Hu Shi, wrote in a letter to Lu Xiaoman, "Speaking of my stay here, I haven't danced at all, but I did go to a brothel once. It was Old Deng who dragged me there. I won't go again. In the social customs at that time, although visiting prostitutes was not something honorable, it was just considered a trifle and a matter of personal morality and didn't do much harm. Some people even regarded visiting prostitutes as a lifelong pursuit, which could only be compared to engaging in academic studies. For example, Gu Hongming, an adherent of the former Qing Dynasty, and Kang Youwei were like this. The former created the famous theory that "men are teapots and women are teacups", while the latter married six wives but that didn't prevent him from having numerous amorous affairs everywhere.民国是中国狎客们的最后一个黄金时代。在当时的社会风尚里，狎妓虽然谈不上光彩，但也只是一种小节和个人私德，无伤大雅。甚至有人把狎妓当成了毕生事业，唯有做学问可与之比拟，如前清遗老辜鸿铭和康有为。前者创立了著名的“男人是茶壶，女人是茶杯”理论，后者娶了六房太太，却不妨碍他四处欠下风流债。如果为他们中的“狎之大者”列一个清单，这会是一个非常庞大而豪华的阵容：陈独秀、蔡锷、袁世凯、吴佩孚、郭沫若……就连后来执掌一国的蒋介石也赫然在列。一生服膺宋明理学的蒋介石，年轻时一直在和“色”做斗争，一边戒色，一边也在犯色。他在日记中对此有忠实记载。比如早年间路过香港时，他警戒自己“香港乃花花世界，余能否经受考验，就看今天”，结果当天晚上他就破了戒，然后懊悔地在日记上写道：“我的毛病就是好色也！”1949年后，随着妓院关张、妓女被改造、卖淫嫖娼非法化，狎客们的春天宣告结束。在新的意识形态里，嫖客和妓女成了道德败坏、世风日下的代名词，是阳光下的罪恶，只能在暗处交易。但严酷的环境并没能阻挡一些人冒着身败名裂的危险去以身试法，就像当年微博大V薛蛮子的入狱不曾扑灭演员黄海波和导演王全安召妓的念头。嫖妓究竟有什么魅力，引无数男人竞折腰？是人类本性的正常释放，是畸形的病症，还是幽暗人性的原罪？日本情爱作家渡边淳一在《男人这东西》一书中，从男女生理构造上的异同出发，对男人为什么爱“风流”给出了他自己的解释。
