Special Issue on Tribology - Advanced Engineering Materials
Scope:
Tribology resembles research related to friction, wear, and lubrication unifying different disciplines including materials science, chemistry, physics, and even biology in an inter- and multi-disciplinary fashion. Although often not noticed, friction- and wear-related phenomena are present in our daily lives and have become more important in recent years due to energy and resource concerns. Beyond examples found in the world of engineering such as mechanical components (bearings, gears, brakes, and piston rings), tribology plays a pivotal role in a broad range of applications, such as contact lenses, lipstick, or other cosmetical products, or even in artificial implants. Since tribology is directly related to the respective energy efficiency (friction) as well as a useful component lifetime (wear and durability), this research discipline becomes more important in times of the global climatic crisis and more environmental consciousness sparking and kick-starting tremendous research activities to develop advanced solutions.
This multidisciplinary-themed collection aims to provide the opportunity to share the latest findings related to applied research involving 2D materials with the research community. We intend to publish research articles, perspectives, and reviews.

Guest Editors:
Carsten Gachot obtained his PhD from Saarland University in Germany in 2012. His research concentrated on the effects of laser interference patterning on the microstructure and topography of metallic surfaces, with a particular emphasis on tribological applications. His Ph.D. thesis was conducted under the guidance of Professors Dr. Frank Mücklich and Dr. Martin H. Müser. In acknowledgment of his significant contributions to the field, Dr. Gachot was honored with the European Honda Initiation Grant in 2011.
Prof. Dr. Gachot has held the position of academic visitor in the tribology group at Imperial College London and currently serves as the head of the tribology research division at the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien). In addition, he is a visiting professor at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and holds the position of chief editor of the peer-reviewed journal "Industrial Lubrication and Tribology," which is published by Emerald Group Publishing in Leeds, United Kingdom. Furthermore, he is the associate editor of the journal "Friction" and serves as a member of the editorial board for the journals "Wear" and "Advanced Engineering Materials" (AEM).
Andreas Rosenkranz is a Professor for Materials-Oriented Tribology and New 2D Materials in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Materials (University of Chile). His research focuses on the characterization, chemical functionalization, and application of new 2D materials. His main field of research relates to tribology, but in the last years, he has expanded his fields of interest towards water purification, catalysis, and biological properties. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal publications, is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and acts as a scientific associate editor and/or editor-in-chief for well-reputed scientific journals including Applied Nanoscience, Frontiers of Chemistry, MetalMat Wiley and Journal of Tribology.
