Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was rescued from a human trafficking operation on January 7, has revealed that he was forced to train as a scammer while held in Myanmar. The 31-year-old actor, known also as Xing Xing, shared details of his ordeal after returning to Thailand, where he met with local authorities to recount his experience.
Wang Xing had initially traveled to Bangkok on January 3, after being told by a Chinese contact that he had secured a film role in the city. However, after staying in touch with his girlfriend, Jia Jia, he lost contact with her following a distress message. Concerned for his safety, Jia Jia and Wang Xing's brother sought help from Thai authorities and the Chinese embassy. They traveled to Bangkok on January 6 to file a report with local police.
Authorities soon located Wang Xing in Myawaddy, a town in Myanmar, on January 7. According to the Bangkok Post, Wang Xing had been picked up at the Mae Sot border town by a car arranged by the same Chinese contact, and was then taken by boat across the border into Myanmar.
Wang Xing told Thai police that he realized he had been deceived when he was taken across the border, but felt powerless to resist. While in Myawaddy, he was forced to train as a scammer, learning how to send fraudulent messages targeting Chinese nationals. Despite the harsh conditions, he clarified that he was not physically harmed, and that the red marks on his left leg, which had raised concerns among netizens, were simply a birthmark.
During the rescue operation, Thai authorities discovered Wang Xing in a location with approximately 50 other Chinese nationals, although their fates remain unclear.
Speaking to the media after his rescue, Wang Xing expressed his gratitude to the Thai government and the Prime Minister for facilitating his return. He also praised Thailand’s safety, stating that he would like to return to the country in the future.
Wang Xing’s case has sparked widespread concern over human trafficking operations in the region, and he will now assist in ongoing investigations into the trafficking network. Once the investigation is complete, the Chinese embassy in Thailand will arrange for his return to China.
