While China faces a challenging gender imbalance, it remains a nation celebrated for its remarkable beauty - particularly among its women. Global icons like Fan Bingbing and Angelababy have captivated audiences worldwide with their striking and unique appearances. Behind them is a wave of talented actresses and entertainers poised to achieve similar success with time and the right exposure in the West. But before they dominate the global stage, let’s take a closer look at the ten cities in China known for their most stunning women.
Having visited each of these cities personally, I’ve carefully curated this list based on firsthand impressions. The rankings, of course, are highly subjective and focus solely on appearance - not personality. (If personality were the measure, Shanghainese women might drop out of the top ten altogether, tying with Yiwu, Zhejiang, for 257th place.)
Remember, beauty is more than skin deep… except when it comes to top ten lists like this one!
10. Harbin
Women from the dongbei region are much vaunted for their height and fair skin. Haerbin, or Harbin as is the Romanized name, is known for producing a disproportionate number of gorgeous women. The only problem is that the temperature hovers around zero degrees centigrade all year, not much of a chance to cast an appreciative look at the denizens of the city that has produced luminous beings such as Li Bingbing and Song Jia. I would include pictures of them, but your head would explode like the fembot in Austin Powers’ in The Spy Who Shagged Me, and this is only number 10 on the list!
9. Nanjing
The province of Jiangsu is not only one of China’s most developed and wealthy provinces, it also boasts a litany of mei nu. Nanjing’s status as both a former capital and current lynchpin of a very advanced province means Nanjing is a hotbed for the hot. Do yourself a favor and visit Nanjing 1912 Leisure Zone located near the Central Business District on a weekend and try to keep your chin out of your shoelaces when you see women who resemble famous Nanjing resident Ni Ni (see below) stroll by.
8. Hangzhou
Hangzhou gets the nod for number eight as it is another provincial capital of a key province and thus attracts a variety of smart, talented and gorgeous women. Beautiful ladies such as He Zhuoyan (pictured below) seem to rise out of the famed West Lake and bless the city with their presence.
7. Chengdu
Sichuan is the reason the saying la meizi (literally ‘hot girl’) exists. It is rumored all the hotpot and spices women eat here give their skin a fair and clean disposition but make their outward personality fiery. The only way to find out is to visit and see a Sichuan la meizi with your own eyes. Bai Ling, familiar to Western audiences through her roles on Lost, is evocative of the breed.
6. Chongqing
Chongqing was spun off from its larger neighbor to the west, Sichuan, in the late 90s. Sichuan lost not only a key outpost on the Yangtze River, but also lost many tasty hotpot restaurants - and more importantly the ability to claim bombshells like Jiang Qinqin (below) as their own.
5. Qingdao
Ah, Qingdao. The namesake beer is watery and the gorgeous women will make your eyes water as well. It is consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in China. It is no surprise given the free-flow booze offered at the Tsingtao Museum, air that won’t decrease your lifespan, pleasant summer weather, beaches and gorgeous women. The aforementioned Fan Bingbing is a Qingdao native.
4. Shenzhen
Shenzhen, once a modest fishing village with a population of 30,000 in the 1980s, has grown into China’s fourth-largest city and the undeniable gem of Guangdong, surpassing even its older sibling, Guangzhou. At least, that’s the story I’m sticking with.
You’ve got to see it to believe it. Shenzhen ranks slightly lower on this list because I suspect many of its most beautiful residents come from other cities, rather than being 'homegrown' talent. But that’s the nature of first-tier cities in China - everyone seems to be from somewhere else.

3. Beijing
Like any capital of any sizeable nation, Beijing has tons of gorgeous women. The only problem is getting a good look at them through the heavy smog can be difficult.

2. Shanghai
Shanghai, also known as 美女山,美女海（translates to godly place of mountains and seas of pretty women）is a fertile ground for gorgeous women. The definitive star in China right now is a Shanghai lass operating under the pseudonym, Angelababy. Maybe you have heard of her. If not you have seen her. Go to Bar Rouge or anywhere in the French Concession at any time of the day and you will see ladies that would threaten Angelababy’s livelihood if only they had a talent besides finding fuerdai and purloining all their RMB.
1. Hong Kong
Take the Kowloon through train someday and go see for yourself. There are women who could win America’s Next Top Model serving you fries from behind the counter at McDonald’s for crying out loud. The ayis sweeping the street would be trophy wives at country clubs in the west. Okay maybe that is a hyperbole. But you get the point. Now excuse me while I gather my passport and make a run for the HK New Territories border.
