A pregnant woman from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, who initially conceived nine babies and underwent fetal reduction procedures to retain twins, had her pregnancy terminated due to severe complications, her husband revealed in a video posted on Tuesday. He explained that a serious infection endangered his wife's health, leaving no option but to terminate the pregnancy.
The woman, identified as Hou, had faced difficulties conceiving due to uterine cysts and endometrial polyps. Nearly a year after marriage, she began ovulation induction therapy under medical supervision and became pregnant in October last year. An ultrasound revealed she was carrying nine fetuses, sparking widespread public attention.
Doctors warned that carrying so many fetuses posed high risks, and Hou underwent two fetal reduction procedures. The first procedure removed four embryos, while the second eliminated three more, leaving her with twins by late November. At the time, her husband shared updates showing two active fetal heartbeats and confirmed that the pregnancy had stabilized, enabling Hou to leave the hospital.
However, complications arose during the mid-stage of her pregnancy. One twin was diagnosed with oligohydramnios, with amniotic fluid depths measured at 12 mm and 32 mm. Although early tests like the Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan showed no abnormalities, Hou later developed an infection that caused a cervical rupture and the amniotic sac to break.
In a video, her husband detailed the progression of her condition, emphasizing that the infection made it impossible to save the babies. Continuing the pregnancy would have posed significant risks to Hou’s life.
Earlier in November, Hou’s husband had posted on social media about her fragile health and petite frame, which added to the challenges of carrying multiple fetuses. Despite the fetal reductions, doctors repeatedly stressed the dangers of such a high-risk pregnancy.
