A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, leaving 126 dead and 188 others injured as of 7 p.m. local time. The earthquake, which occurred at 9:05 a.m. on January 7, 2025, had a depth of 10 kilometers, according to initial reports.
The earthquake caused widespread devastation, particularly in the densely populated areas of Cuoguo Township, Changshuo Township, and Quluo Township. A total of 3,609 homes were reported to have collapsed. The majority of the casualties are from these regions, where the earthquake’s impact was most severe. Among the injured, 28 people are reported to be in critical condition and have been transferred to the city’s hospital for urgent care.
In response to the disaster, local authorities quickly activated emergency response plans. Rescue teams, including members from the Changsha Yue Lu Blue Sky Rescue Team, were dispatched to the scene with advanced search-and-rescue equipment. The team departed from Huanghua Airport at 4:40 p.m. and arrived at Lhasa Airport at 8:08 p.m. to continue their efforts on the ground. Simultaneously, the Tibet Military District sent troops to deliver essential supplies, such as food and daily necessities, to ensure the survival of affected residents.

Many shared heartfelt condolences for the victims and offered prayers for the survivors. There was widespread praise for the selfless dedication of rescue workers and volunteers, who are working tirelessly under difficult conditions.
However, some internet users voiced concerns about the challenges faced in the ongoing rescue operations and the living conditions of the affected population. Calls for increased supply of aid and heightened attention to the safety and basic needs of the disaster-stricken areas have been echoed online.
