A new lifestyle trend dubbed the “white woman aesthetic” has taken Chinese social media by storm, as young women share their takes on modern Western lifestyles featuring activewear and minimalist accessories.
The trend, which began gaining traction on Xiaohongshu in late 2024, centers on creating a specific look often associated with middle-class American women. Its key components include wearing Lululemon activewear and carrying Stanley cups. To complete the aesthetic, participants frequently add items like Apple AirPods, Converse sneakers, and Tiffany jewelry.
More than just a fashion statement, the trend represents a shift in how young Chinese women view lifestyle aspirations. Many see it as a way to break free from the high-pressure “996” work culture, which demands working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week. The aesthetic is perceived as embodying a relaxed, self-care-focused lifestyle - a stark contrast to the grueling routines common in China’s urban centers.
The trend’s rise parallels other lifestyle fads, such as the “white people food” phenomenon. This trend emphasizes simple, low-calorie meals like Greek yogurt with nuts, cereal, and low-sugar fruits, further reflecting the desire for a perceived healthier and simpler way of living.
While the “white woman aesthetic” has gone viral, it has not escaped criticism. Some netizens argue that the trend reflects unrealistic aspirations, particularly for workers earning modest incomes. One Xiaohongshu user commented, “People with a monthly salary of 8,000 yuan ($1,100) can’t afford to wake up at 6 a.m. for skincare and exercise.”
Others poked fun at the trend, likening it to mimicking “white lady soccer moms” from affluent neighborhoods. One user remarked, “I feel like I’m looking at a guide on how to dress like the wealthy community moms near my home.”
