In the quiet village of Lotus Stone in Suining, Sichuan Province, I, Liang Yanhui (formerly known as Xiao Yanfei), have spent over two decades searching for my mother, Wu Subi, who mysteriously vanished in 1984. Today, the melodies of "Mother's Love" still bring tears to my eyes, as they remind me of the profound void her disappearance left in our lives.
I was just a child when my mother, six months pregnant at the time, disappeared without a trace. It wasn't until 2019 that the fog surrounding her disappearance finally began to lift, revealing a horrifying truth: my father was the mastermind behind her disappearance.
My mother, born in December 1953, was the youngest daughter in her family, with five brothers and two sisters. In 1978, she married my father in Suining, becoming his second wife. She gave birth to me in 1979 and my brother in 1982. Life wasn't easy for her. My father had a violent temper, and I often witnessed him beating her. Despite the abuse, she endured it all for the sake of her children.
I still cherish the few precious memories I have of her - like when she would carry my younger brother on her back and hold my hand as we went to pick wild vegetables in the fields. Her gentle voice calling us "Yanhui" and "Hongchun" still echoes in my dreams.
The truth that emerged in 2019 was more sinister than I could have imagined. My father, desperate to reunite with his first wife (his cousin), orchestrated my mother's abduction. On May 5, 1984, with the help of our neighbor Xiao and several accomplices, he had my pregnant mother forcibly taken to Inner Mongolia after she refused to leave the village voluntarily.
Through years of investigation, I discovered that my mother was initially sold to a family named Dang in Inner Mongolia. Due to her distressed state, she was then resold to a Zhang family in Liangcheng County, where she gave birth to a son. Later, she was sold again to a Cao family in Western Shagou Village, where she had another child before disappearing when the boy was six years old.
The most heartbreaking revelation was that my father also sold my younger brother, who suffered from congenital cataracts. He was forced to work at construction sites at a young age, missing the crucial window for treating his eye condition.
Today, both my brother and I have our own families. I have two sons, and he has a son and a daughter. Our wives fully support our continuing search for our mother. Though our maternal uncles have all passed away, our aunts still actively help us search for her.
Some say she's no longer alive, while others claim she's still living but mentally unstable. The pain of not knowing her fate continues to haunt us. The statute of limitations for prosecuting those responsible has expired, but our determination to find her remains unwavering.
Every day, we hope that somewhere, our mother is still waiting for us, remembering her children just as we remember her. Through sharing our story, we hope to touch the consciences of those involved and perhaps finally uncover the truth about our mother's whereabouts.
