We invite CSC applicants for a PhD position on the development of hybrid cavities (photon-plasmon resonators) coupled to solid-state single photon emitters (defects in hexagonal Boron Nitride).
This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in experimental quantum photonics, working with leading experts and utilizing state-of-the-art facilities.
The project aims to advance quantum photonic technologies by developing quantum light sources composed by multiple photons (see figure). We will harness the coupling of two or more hBN defects via plasmonic interactions, embedding this system in a photonic open cavity. This research will pave the way for applications on secure communications, and quantum metrology.
The group SemicUAM belongs to the Department of Physics of Materials at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), and it is affiliated to the Condensed Matter Physics Center (IfiMAC), a María de Maeztu Excellence Research Institute.
This PhD grant offers advanced training on quantum nanophotonic technologies:
• Experimental expertise:: Gain expertise in nanofabrication, micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy, and varied quantum optical methods.
• Academic Excellence: Participate in the "Materiales Avanzados y Nanotecnología Doctoral Program" and benefit from the affiliated institutes IfiMAC and Nicolás Cabrera Institute (INC).
• International Collaboration: Engage with global research partners associated to this project and present your work at major international conferences on quantum photonic technologies.
• Innovative Impact: Contribute to pioneering research with significant potential to transform quantum communication and information processing.
Responsibilities, as a PhD student, you will:
• Assist in the design and nanofabrication of photonic nanostructures.
• Participate in the control and characterization of hBN defects.
• Conduct PL experiments and complex single-photon correlation studies.
• Participate in the assembly and characterization of hybrid cavity structures and quan-tum optical measurements.
• Collaborate with international partners and contribute to scientific publications and con-ference presentations.
Qualifications, candidates should have:
• A strong background in physics, materials science, nanophotonics, quantum optics, engineering and a keen interest in experimental quantum photonics.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills (including advanced python program-ming). COMSOL programming skills is highly appreciated.
• The ability to work both independently, and as part of a team.
• Proven proficiency in English, both written and spoken (certificates of, at least, B2 level are required).
Application Process, to apply, please send the following documents to carlos.anton@uam.es indicating in the email subject “CSC candidate Multiphoton” followed by your name:
- A detailed CV, including academic background and research experience.
- A cover letter explaining your motivation and suitability for the position.
- Recommendation letters of, at least, two academic referees.
Application Deadline: 15th March 2025
Join Us! This is a unique opportunity to be part of a transformative research project at the forefront of quantum photonics. If you are passionate about advancing science and eager to make a significant impact, we encourage you to apply.
We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and encourages all qualified candidates to apply. We look forward to receiving your application and welcoming you to our research community.
