The New Zealand Consulate-General in Shanghai is looking for one enthusiastic person to join its trade and economic team as a policy adviser and interpreter. The focus of this position is on supporting New Zealand’s trade and economic relationship with East China, within which there is an exciting breadth and variety of work!

Key tasks
Undertake research and analysis.
Provide policy advice and reporting on significant trade and economic developments in Shanghai and the consular provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui.
Build up and maintain a network of contacts in relevant local government organisations, agencies and institutions, New Zealand businesses and other countries’ business associations, and support the Consulate-General in engaging with these organisations.
Assist with arranging visit programmes and meetings for New Zealand ministers and officials, and organising Consulate events.
Provide accurate interpretation (Chinese/English and English/Chinese) at official meetings.
Translate official correspondence.
Undertake Consulate work on short work trips.
Attend events hosted by the Consulate or other events as required.
Support other Consulate team members with other complex or urgent tasks.
From time to time, assist in the work of the broader Consulate.
The Consulate is looking for the following skills and capabilities:
High degree of oral and written proficiency in both Mandarin Chinese and English.
Strong interpersonal skills, able to work effectively with other team members.
Research and analytical skills.
Translation and interpretation skills.
Project management, including planning and event management skills.
Well-organised; able to manage work that needs to be progressed over time and at times large workload.
Strong initiative, a problem-solving mentality, and ability to work independently on tasks.
Flexibility and adaptability.
Familiarity with the working environment in China, including government and local government systems.
Developed computer skills (particularly MS Office, Excel, and internet research capability).
Demonstrated experience working with other cultures to deliver successful outcomes.
Knowledge or experience of New Zealand an advantage.
Qualifications/Experience
At least five years post qualification experience in relevant fields.
Tertiary qualifications in fields related to trade/economics and public policy or interpretation and translation. Previous experience working on topics in trade/economics or public policy is highly desirable.
Demonstrated experience performing professional interpretation and translation work is required. Formal interpretation and/or translation qualifications are desirable.
Demonstrated depth of understanding of China’s political and economic environment as well as proven experience operating in an international environment.
Previous experience in maintaining contact with Chinese or local government agencies.

Salary
The starting salary shall be around 235,000 RMB annually.
