Three-day “agri-tainment” in ChinaTo enjoy some rural leisure time in China, Chris from England came to Grandma's House, a farmhouse outside of Beijing in Fangshan District. At the homestay, he met the housekeepers, three middle-aged women. He called them “big sisters” like the locals. On his first day there, Chris learned about the courtyard. The sisters told him that it had been built during the Qing Dynasty. The periphery of the courtyard was surrounded by a wall made of irregular stones. Inside the courtyard, there were square houses made of bricks. The doors and windows of the houses were all made of wood. Sunlight was streaming into the courtyard. Chris felt warm in this remote countryside. On the second day, Chris rose early and went out to the fields to pick vegetables with the sisters. First, he picked red and green peppers and long cowpeas. Then as the sisters picked mushrooms, he quickly helped put them into a bamboo basket. After much hard work, the sisters used the freshly picked ingredients to make a delicious vegetarian dish: hand-pulled noodles with fried tofu and spicy mushrooms. The noodles were chewy, and the tofu was juicy from the first bite. The mushrooms were also delicious, and Chris — a big fan of Sichuan cuisine — kept eating them with his chopsticks. After the meal, Chris said, “This journey has refreshed me.”On the third day at Grandma's House, Chris personally prepared a dish from his homeland: English pumpkin soup. In his opinion, there were many English dishes in which Chinese ingredients could be used. He used a pumpkin and an onion to make the soup and then poured it into a hollowed-out pumpkin, a natural food container. The sisters and some local friends were sitting at the table quietly waiting as he walked into the dining room with his dish. This made Chris once again value the simplicity and joy of rural life.Three days in the Chinese farmhouse quickly passed. As Chris said goodbye to everyone, the sisters gave him some home-grown vegetables. They knew that, like them, Chris loved the countryside and the food grown here.选自《英语周报》,版权所有,侵权必究!
