Meet the teenager who lives on trains
At age 16, Lasse Stolley from Germany decided to leave home for a change of scenery. Little did he know that this change of scenery would take him further than 500,000 kilometers — all on trains.Inspired by a documentary he had watched, in 2022 Stolley bought a BahnCard 100, a ticket that allows unlimited travel on all Deutsche Bahn trains in Germany for a year. But Stolley didn't just travel on those trains. He lived on them.Over a year and a half later, and after upgrading to a first-class BahnCard, Stolley is still living on trains full-time, taking trips during the day and sleeping across the seats on high-speed night trains. “I have a lot of freedom and can decide every day where I want to go, whether to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea,”Stolley said. Each morning, Stolley will check the train connections for the day, and decide what journeys he'll take depending on the weather and his mood. He might stop off at a swimming pool for a shower, or take in the scenery with a hike between train rides. While he doesn't pay rent, the teenager spends around $10,000 a year on living costs, including his $6,400 train pass, food, and entry fees to things like swimming pools. But since Stolley is a Deutsche Bahn customer holding a first-class BahnCard, he can eat from Deutsche Bahn lounges for free. He makes money on the move by working as a programmer on his laptop computer. In 2023 alone, the teenager traveled over 300,000 kilometers across Germany, and spent over 3,700 hours on trains. He has also taken trains across Europe with an Interrail pass, and traveled as far as Ankara in Turkey.Stolley documents all of his adventures on his online blog, named“Life on the Train”.
