American student's Chinese dreamStanding amidst the campus of Tianjin University (TJU) in China, Raina Chareese Luke, an American exchange student from Georgia, is proof of the power of cultural fascination.Raina's interest in Chinese culture was excited in a middle school language class back in the United States. A Chinese song she heard in class left a mark on her young mind. This experience opened a gateway for her to Chinese movies, soap operas, and further language practice at a Chinese restaurant where she worked part-time. These experiences shaped her perspective and motivated her to sign up for a language program in China.“For me, TJU has two attractive aspects. One is its old-fashioned campus, which meets my expectations of the first modern universities in China. The other is the professionalism shown by TJU admission advisors during my application process. They responded to my questions very quickly,”Raina said.In September 2023, Raina eventually set foot in China. She had a hard time adjusting to campus life in the early days after she arrived at TJU. She recalled feeling puzzled by the washingmachine in her dormitory and having to handwash her clothes for two weeks. But before long, she became used to the machine and began to appreciate the convenience it provided.Raina had a busy life at TJU.“Studying is my first priority. The Chinese language program lasts for only one semester, so every day counts,”she said. In addition to her studies, Raina actively sought opportunities to experience Chinese culture. Particularly fond of traditional Chinese clothing, she wore qipao or hanfu almost every day. She also participated in university events, such as the sports meeting and the New Year Gala.In February 2024, Raina returned to her hometown.
