Indian teen creates wearable device for Alzheimer's patients

Alzheimer's disease is a condition that affects memory and cognition. It can cause someone to forget to do important things or even not recognize their family and friends.
Hemesh Chadalavada, from Hyderabad in India, learned this one day in 2018, when his grandmother went into the kitchen while he was watching television. After some time, Chadalavada noticed she'd forgotten to turn the gas off. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's not long before. That summer, he began to notice his grandmother acting differently. “She used to get up at 3 or 4 in the morning and go outside, thinking she was on a train,”he said. Chadalavada was only 12 at the time, but he decided to make a device that could help people like his grandmother.

When Chadalavada was 17 years old, he invented the Alpha Monitor, a device that is light and can be worn around the arm and other parts of the body. It sets off an alarm when the person wearing it starts to move. It sends a warning to a caregiver if the wearer falls or gets lost. It also measures pulse and temperature, and tells wearers when to take their medicine.

Chadalavada developed 20 different models after watching videos to teach himself about robotics. He also worked with the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India to understand more about the needs of people with Alzheimer's.

In 2022, Chadalavada won $40,000 from Samsung to help him develop the Alpha Monitor. It's not yet on the market, but Chadalavada says he plans to finish working on it when he finishes his school exams, and hopes to have it ready to be sold by September.
