Zhangye Danxia Geopark is located in Zhangye City, Gansu Province, China. It rests in the foothills of the Qilian Mountains. The national park is famous for its incredible display of colors across hills and rock formations, which is considered as one of the most amazing landscapes in China.
Moving tectonic plates have created colorful landscapes with sandstone and minerals being layered on top of each other over the years. Rain, wind, and time have worked together to shape them into various columns, valleys and amazing patterns to be viewed by all.
Exploring Zhangye Danxia Geopark involves admiring the splendid Danxia landscape from great high sightseeing platforms and hiking on the well-paved paths from one sightseeing platform to another. To help travelers enjoy the best of the landscape, five sightseeing platforms have been built on the top of some higher hills.
Travelers need to hike up some winding stone steps to get to the top of the platform.
The best months of the year to see the landscape are June, July, August and September when the weather is comfortable. The moderate rainfall in the summer can deepen the colors of the mountain. The best hours for sightseeing are the early morning and late afternoon when the temperatures are lower and colors are clearer. The most beautiful moment is the sunset when golden sunlight shines on the red mountains.
