Claim to fame
Gabriella created her own sci-fi series when she was 11. What began as an 18-page story became the first volume of her four-part fantasy series A Link Between Two Worlds. Three years later, she has published four original series: A Link Between Two Worlds, A Twisted Destiny, The Survival of the Glitches and Whispering Willow.
How Gabriella creates parallel worlds
As a science fiction and fantasy writer, Gabriella invents imaginary worlds and characters with special powers.“Most of my ideas come from my dreams,” said Gabriella. Her newest book, Whispering Willow, is about a girl suffering from memory loss. She learns about a mysterious tree with the power to bring her memories back.“I knew I wanted to write a story about an ancient tree,” said Gabriella.“We were driving past a park with willow trees and I was wondering what it would be like if the ancient tree was a magic willow tree.”
Writing a fantasy series from scratch means Gabriella must invent how her imaginary world works and what her characters can do. “Before, I used to make it up as I go,” said Gabriella.“But for this new book series, I write down, ‘OK, in this world, people can do this and they can't do that.’ Or ‘That person can use this amount of magic, but that person can't.'”
How self-publishing works
After Gabriella finishes writing a book, she sends it to her family and friends and asks for advice. When she feels like her book is done, she works with a self-publishing company. It helps her edit her book and sell it on sites like Indigo, Amazon and on Gabriella's personal website.
Gabriella said that she wanted to keep writing in the science fiction and fantasy genres. “I'm interested in the galaxy and the mysteries that could be there,” said Gabriella. “I like fantasy better than a regular story.”
