Chelsea Flower Show is a famous show run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), a gardening charity, in Chelsea, London. It is a chance for garden designers to show their skills and win awards for their creations. There were 35 gardens at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
Children played an important part in this year's show. The“no adults allowed”garden was designed by primary school children and featured woodland, grasslands and a wetland area. It also featured a play area with a natural den in a pool of water that children could slide down into. The children's garden was designed to show how important it is to provide children with chances to connect with nature. The RHS's Helena Pettit said,“We're very excited that we have children designers taking centre stage, who want to encourage children everywhere to become gardeners, to help save the planet and have fun.”
This year, children, for the first time, had the chance to choose one garden they would most like to play in. Judges from primary schools looked at whether a garden was a good place to play, if it was attractive to wildlife, and how the garden made them feel. The children's choice award went to the Octavia Hill garden. A junior judge said, “I love how certain areas provide more shade than others ... the planting has attracted a lot of wildlife.” Charlotte Crowe, who is seven, won a competition to plant a young tree at the Octavia Hill garden with actor Judi Dench.
