In a disturbing case of domestic violence, a man currently incarcerated for abusing his ex-wife has reportedly been pressuring her to write a letter of forgiveness before his trial.
The woman, identified as Xiao Xie, told reporters from Chengdu on December 24 that she endured over two years of abuse at the hands of her former husband, He. She revealed that He had attacked her 16 times during their marriage. As the trial approached, He, who is currently in detention, sent a threatening letter to Xiao Xie, demanding that she write a letter of forgiveness. He warned her, "You should understand the consequences of not writing it. Leave some room for reconciliation in the future."
Xiao Xie, clearly frightened for her safety, expressed deep concern over the possibility of He being released from prison. "If he gets out, I'll be dead. Who will help me then? Who will save me? He won’t give me a chance to live again," she said, her voice trembling with fear.
Xiao Xie’s case has shed light on the psychological toll of domestic violence, particularly when the victim is coerced or manipulated into accepting blame or forgiving their abuser. Her scars, both physical and emotional, have left a lasting impact. Xiao Xie revealed that the abuse left permanent scars covering 20% of her body, a grim reminder of the years of torment she endured.
The court case has sparked widespread outrage, with many people expressing sympathy for Xiao Xie and condemning the actions of her former husband. Domestic violence advocates have emphasized the need for stronger protections for victims and more support for individuals who face coercion from abusers even after they have been incarcerated.
