[SEU News Network, April 30th] (Correspondent: Dong Xuan) Recently, a 79th grade alumus Xia Zuming has been elected as a PTI Fellow in the United States. PTI, an abbreviation of Post-Tensioning Institute, is composed of outstanding designers, construction personnel, university professors, and government officials engaged in post-tensioning research all over the world. At the awarding ceremony, Prof. Xia, in his short two-minute speech, talked about his study experience at SEU and thanked the university for its cultivation.
Prof. Xia is serving as Technical Director of VSL (Vorspann System Losinger), one of the world’s largest manufacturers of prestressed products, and a member of the ACI-ASCE Prestressed Committee in the United States. He studied industrial and civil building at SEU from 1979 to 1983. In 1985, he began to pursue his master’s degree in structural engineering at SEU. After graduating with a master’s degree in 1988, he stayed at the university to teach and concurrently pursued a part-time doctoral degree. In 1996, he continued his studies at the University of Michigan in the United States and obtained a doctoral degree in structural engineering. During his 22 years of working at VSL in America, he participated in many major projects in terms of prestressed design and construction, and the projects he led have won the highest award in bridge and housing applicationsfrom the PTI.
Prof. Xia cares deeply about his alma mater. He has returned to school to participate in academic activities frequently and expressed his nostalgia for the university on various occasions. He often talked about his decade-long study and work experience at SEU, especially the earnest teachings of his mentor, Academician Lu Zhitao during his doctoral studies. At the PTI Fellow awarding ceremony, Prof. Xia once again expressed his gratitude to his alma mater and teachers.
