SEU Holds the Medicine and Life Science Conference

[SEU News Network, June 3^rd] On May 26^th, Southeast University (SEU) hosted the Medicine and Life Science Innovation and Development Conference in Nanjing’s Jiangbei New Area. The conference was attended by distinguished guests, including Nobel Laureate Thomas Christian Südhof, Han Qide, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Honorary Chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, Jin Xiaotao, former Deputy Director of the National Health Commission and President of Chinese Medical Information and Big Data Association, Chen Zhichang, Vice Secretary of CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Mayor of Nanjing, Lu Weidong, member of the Standing Committee of CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Secretary of the Jiangbei New Area Party Working Committee, Zuo Wei, Secretary of CPC SEU Committee, Huang Ru, CAS Academician and President of SEU, as well as several other CAS academicians, including Yang Huanming, Chen Runsheng, Hou Fanfan, Cheng Heping, Bian Xiuwu, Fan Jia, Teng Gaojun, Wang Jian’an and Zheng Hairong, academicians from Chinese Academy of Engineering including Liu Depei, Liu Zhihong, Cheng Jing, Zhan Qimin, Wu Tangchun, Ji Xunming, Wang Zhenchang, fellows from European Academy of Sciences including Chen Xiaoyuan and Nassar Navab, Jian Li, Academician of Australian Academy of Science, Zhong Wenqi, and Qiu Haibo, Vice Presidents of SEU. The conference was presided over by Qiu Haibo.

Huang Ru and Teng Gaojun unveiled the Department of Medicine and Life Science, which aims to improve SEU’s academic governance system, promote the development of integrated medical sciences, accelerate interdisciplinary research, and nurture a favorable environment for cross-disciplinary studies.

Zuo Wei presented Teng Gaojun with the Letter of Appointment as Director of the Department of Medicine and Life Science.

To gather support from all sides to develop the Department of Medicine and Life Science, the university has established the Strategy Consulting Committee of SEU Department of Medicine and Life Science. Huang Ru, President of SEU, presented the Letter of Appointment to Zhan Qimin and Yang Huanming serving as Director and Deputy Director of the Department respectively.

Seven major platforms were also inaugurated at the conference, all located in Nanjing’s Jiangbei New Area: the State Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, the National Medical Research and Industry-Education Integration and Innovation Platform for Interventional Medical Engineering, the National Flagship Hospital for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, the Basic Medicine Research and Innovation Center of the Ministry of Education, the Institute of Medical Science, Technology, and Engineering of SEU, and the Organ-on-a-Chip Research Institute of SEU, which are all located in Nanjing Jiangbei New Area.

Zhong Wenqi and Wang Wei, Deputy Director of the Jiangbei New Area Management Committee, signed the Agreement on Promoting the Settlement of the Department of Medicine and Life Science of Southeast University in Jiangbei New Area. The agreement aims to promote the integrated medical science strategy of SEU to developin Nanjing Jiangbei New Area.

Zhong Wenqi and Du Yuantai, Vice President of the Chinese Medical Information and Big Data Association (CHMIA), signed the cooperation agreement between SEU and CHMIA to jointly build the National Health Big Data Research Institute.

At the meeting, the English journal Engineering Medicine, hosted by Zhongda Hospital affiliated to SEU, was officially launched. Teng Gaojun, Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Zheng Hairong, Consultant of the journal, Xiao Ruiping, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, and Qi Xiaolong, Executive Editor-in-Chief witnessed the launch of the first issue of the journal.

Teng Gaojun released ten major technological achievements in interdisciplinary medical engineering of SEU, including interventional robots, the construction of high-fidelity human organ chips, the establishment of a big data platform for research on single-neuron diversity of the entire brain and informatics.

After the opening ceremony, a high-end academic report session was held, featuring presentations by Academicians Liu Depei, Zhan Qimin, Teng Gaojun, and Nobel Laureate Thomas Christian Südhof, focusing on the innovative development of interdisciplinary medical engineering.
