SEU team designed “Ice and Snow Five Rings Bridge”

With the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics approaching, the “Ice and Snow Five Rings Bridge”, a major supporting project of Yanchong Expressway in Taizicheng Area, has become an internet-famous venue. The landscape and bridge design team exactly come from Architecture and Engineering Co., Ltd. of Southeast University, led by Ding Jianming, He Yonghai, Zhu Jijun and Zhang Guoqing with Ding Jianming and Cao Fei as the project’s chief designers,  Wang Jianguo and He Jingtang as the design consultants. The project was developed by Hebei Expressway Management Bureau, designed by Architecture and Engineering Co., Ltd. of Southeast University in cooperation with Hebei Provincial Communications Panning, Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., and jointly constructed by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway Shanhaiguan Bridge Group Co., Ltd.


Integration of Chinese traditional culture 

and modern Olympic culture

The “Ice and Snow Five Rings Bridge” functions as the gateway to Chongli Winter Olympic Village, so the concept of traditional Chinese portal has been introduced into the design. As a gate separating two different areas in traditional Chinese gardens, the moon gate is a circular opening in a garden wall that acts as a pedestrian passageway. Based on the modeling of the moon gate, SEU team also added the pattern of ice and snow to the detailed structural design, successfully realizing the integration of Chinese traditional culture and modern Olympic culture.  

Specifically, each bridge tower is composed of two concentric ellipses inside and outside, symbolizing the Olympic spirit of “One World and One Dream”. The connecting rod with snowflake texture is also used between every two rings to form a whole, which echoes the motto of “Together for a Shared Future” of the 2022 Winter Olympics. On the whole, five-ring towers form a five rings shape, and the wind mouth between each tower forms a vertical connection, symbolizing the close connection of the world.

Adjustments to the local landform

“The site topography of the ‘Ice and Snow Five Rings Bridge’ is very complex, and the height difference between the bridge deck and the ground is about 20m. In addition to crossing the underpass road to the Winter Olympic Village, the bridge also needs to cross a small river along the valley.” Prof. Ding Jianming from School of Transportation of SEU introduced that since the bridge head is connected with the chessboard beam tunnel, the bridge deck cannot be too wide, the team has to divide the bridge into two parts with different spans, upstream and downstream. The staggered layout of these two parts is consistent with the surrounding terrain environment, reflecting the design idea of “adjusting measures to local conditions”.

The “Ice and Snow Five Rings Bridge” against the snow integrates beauty and connotation, attracting many tourists to take photos. For the sake of the visitors, a specific viewing area has been opened at Taizicheng Service Area.
