On April 10th, the Xuelong polar icebreaker carrying China’s 40th Antarctic scientific expedition team docked in Qingdao. Ge Jian and Wang Qihang, two members from the School of Automation at SEU, accomplished their scientific research missions and returned with team in triumph. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Shandong Provincial People’s Government held a welcome ceremony at the Olympic Sailing Base Pier in Qingdao. Following the welcome event, the Xuelong-2icebreaker held a five-day open day and the Xuelong icebreaker held a three-day open day for local members of the public to visit.

On November 1st, 2023, China’s 40th Antarctic scientific expedition team set sail from Shanghai on the two polar icebreakers: Xuelong and Xuelong-2, and a cargo vessel named Tianhui. Ge Jian, a faculty member from the School of Automation at SEU, and Wang Qihang, a young researcher from the School of Automation, joined the expedition. They upgraded and maintained the “SEU Pole Energy 2.0” – an intelligent power system at Kunlun Station, which has significantly improved the utilization of green energy, making contributions to the protection of the Antarctic environment. Meanwhile, they were assigned to maintain the “SEU Pole Energy”a remotely controlled module installed at Taishan Station that can supply power during the unattended period, thus providing uninterrupted power to relevant scientific research equipment. Additionally, they assisted the scientific expedition team in accomplishing other related work.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter to China’s Antarctic Taishan Station and his inspection of the Xuelong icebreaker, the 20thanniversary of the establishment of China’s Arctic Yellow River Station, and the 40th anniversary of China’s polar expeditions. SEU adheres to serving major national strategies and supporting the Antarctic scientific research cause. It has dispatched teachers and students to participate in China’s 36th, 39th, and 40th Antarctic scientific expeditions. In Antarctica, the “SEU Pole Energy” that functions as an unattended intelligent power supply system has been installed, providing stable and reliable power supply, environmental support, and communication links for Antarctic scientific research field equipment. Currently, SEU has successively sent 11 personnel to Kunlun Station, Taishan Station, and Zhongshan Station in Antarctica to accomplish relevant scientific research tasks, contributing a continuous stream of SEU strength to China’s polar scientific research cause.

To enable young people to experience this exciting moment personally and help them establish the aspiration of “strengthening the country through innovation in science and technology”, the School of Automation at SEU and the Shandong Enrollment Promotion Group also invited over 50 teachers and students from five key high schools in Qingdao, including Qingdao No. 2 Middle School, Qingdao No. 58 High School of Shandong Province, Qingdao Academy, Qingdao Weiming School, and Qingdao West Coast District No. 1 Senior High School, to participate in this welcome ceremony. Through experiencing the Antarctic scientific research atmosphere on site and visiting the Xuelong icebreaker at a close distance, this event allowed young people to gain a deeper understanding of the working principles and applications of these national scientific powerhouses, thereby enhancing their understanding of scientific knowledge, stimulating their strong interest in science and engineering fields, and sowing the seeds of aspiration within them.
