The statistics are broken down by domicile, nation and region of the UK, disadvantage, school type, gender, ethnicity and disability, and they are presented at University level and by course and college. The data reveals the consolidation of Oxford's recent progress to ensure that those with the highest academic potential, from all backgrounds, can realise their aspirations to study here.

Admission to Oxford is increasingly competitive. Over the past five years, students from a wider range of backgrounds than ever have joined the University, including from areas of social and economic disadvantage.

In 2023, 21.2% of UK undergraduates admitted came from the least advantaged backgrounds, including students from areas of social and economic disadvantage, students from areas of low progression to higher education and students eligible for Free School Meals. 7.6% of UK students admitted were eligible for Free School Meals (up from 5.3% in 2021). Students, particularly those from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, continue to feel the educational impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Oxford remains committed to building a more inclusive university and being representative of wider society and is building on and expanding its outreach activities to engage students earlier in their educational journey.

Between 2019 and 2023, within the total group of UK-domiciled undergraduates admitted:

  • The proportion from state schools rose from 62.3% to 67.6%.

  • The proportion identifying as Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) rose from 22% to 28.8%.

  • The proportion from socio-economically disadvantaged areas rose from 12.2% to 14.4%.

  • The proportion from areas of low progression to higher education reduced from 14% to 13.3%.

  • The proportion declaring a disability rose from 9.5% to 19%.

  • The proportion of women reduced from 54.3% to 52.2%.

Oxford remains committed to ensuring that talented, academically motivated students, from all backgrounds, see Oxford as a place for them and have a fair chance of securing an offer for their selected course.

6. Continuous focus on UK-domiciled students from a disadvatanged background.

As before, the report includes figures related to differing levels of socio-economic advantage and progression to higher education across the UK, and are derived from the ACORN and POLAR5 demographic systems. This year information on Free Schools Meals has also been included.

ACORN is a postcode-based tool that categorises the UK’s population by level of socio-economic advantage.  POLAR is a similar tool that measures how likely young people are to participate in higher education based on where they live. The ACORN and POLAR systems are widely recognised measures used to set admissions targets for universities including Oxford. In 2023, 14.4% of UK students admitted to Oxford came from the two most socioeconomically disadvantaged groups  (ACORN categories 4 and 56).

In 2023, 13.3% of UK students admitted to Oxford were from the two groups with lowest progression to higher education  (POLAR quintiles 1 and 2).

In 2023, 7.6% of UK students admitted to Oxford were eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). This is an increase of 2.3 percentage points since 2021. (No FSM data is available for previous years.)

7. Overall increase in the proportion of students admitted from the UK state sector, with a minor decrease from last year.

The proportion of students admitted to Oxford from the UK state sector in 2023 was 67.6%. This is an increase of  5.3 percentage points from 2019, but a minor decrease compared with 2022.

The top five courses with the highest percentage of admitted students from independent schools were Classics, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Music, Engineering Science and Economics and Management.

From 2021 to 2023, the top five colleges with the highest percentage of admitted students from state schools were Mansfield College, Worcester College, Brasenose College, Hertford College, and St John's College. The top five colleges with the highest percentage of admitted students from independent schools were Pembroke College, Trinity College, New College, Lincoln College, and St Hugh's College.

The top five courses with the highest male percentage were Mathematics & Computer Science, Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Science, and Mathematics.

9. The proportion of admitted UK-domiciled Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students has increased yearly.

UK-domiciled Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students include those who indicate in their UCAS application that they identify as Black (including African, Caribbean and other Black background), Asian (including Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese and other Asian background), Mixed Heritage (including White & Asian, White &  Black African, White & Black Caribbean and other Mixed background), Arab or any other ethnicity except White.
