Oxford vaccine reaches two billion dose milestone

In November 2021,  AstraZeneca and its partners have supplied two billion doses of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine to more than 170 countries across the world. Oxford’s invention of simple manufacturing method has enabled rapid scale up of vaccine manufacturing in many countries around the world. The combination of this new approach with AstraZeneca’s global footprint and commitment have enabled the vaccine being made in 15 countries, in use in over 170 countries across seven continents. Approximately two-thirds of these have gone to low- and lower-middle-income countries, including more than 170 million doses delivered to 130 countries through the COVAX Facility.

Oxford University makes positive strides in widening access

In May 2021, Oxford’s published the 4th undergraduate admissions report showing the Covid-19 pandemic has not affected the University’s continued progress to widening access for undergraduate students. The report shows:

• The proportion of incoming students from state schools rose to a record 68.6%.

• The proportion of incoming students identifying as Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) rose to 23.6%.

• The proportion of incoming students from socio-economically disadvantaged areas now stands at 15.9%.

• The proportion of incoming students from areas of low progression to higher education is 15.6%

• The proportion of students declaring a disability has grown from 7.2% to 10.4% in the last five years

• The University continues to attract more women than men (54.2%)

There was concern across the sector that the method chosen to award A-level grades last year might negatively impact young people from under-represented backgrounds, particularly those who had been adversely affected by the pandemic crisis. However, the collegiate University worked to support students affected, being as flexible as possible, ensuring that the most talented applicants were accepted, especially those who are under-represented at the University. Most recently, these plans include adding 300 places to benefit from the online academic support offered by the Opportunity Oxford bridging scheme, for students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds. This will take the number of students it supports from an initial 116 to almost 500 in just two years.

Oxford University contributed £15.7 billion to the UK economy in 2018/19

Perhaps the most dramatic indicator this year of the impact of the University of Oxford as a whole, came in a report produced by London Economics in July, which estimated the total impact of the University’s activities on the UK economy in 2018-19 to be £15.7 billion, with 40% of this economic impact occurring outside the South East. This figure demonstrates that for every £1 invested in Oxford, research and innovation generates more than £10 for the UK economy. Specifically, the analysis captures the economic impact of:

  • The University’s research and knowledge exchange activities at £7.9 billion

  • The University’s teaching and learning activities at £422 million

  • The University’s educational exports at £732 million

  • The spending of the University and its colleges at £6 billion

  • The University’s contribution to tourism at £611 million

The economic impact of the University of Oxford’s research and knowledge exchange activities was estimated at £7.9 billion and these activities supported over 28,000 full-time jobs. This includes a £4.5 billion impact of the University’s research activities on the UK economy. In addition, £3.4 billion was generated by impacts associated with the University’s licensing of its intellectual property (IP) to other organisations, the operations of spinout companies whose activities are based on the University’s IP, and the activities of companies located at the Begbroke and Oxford Science Parks.
