牛津大学赛德商学院首届高级工商管理硕士(EMBA)班开学至今已有 20 年。

It has been 20 years since the first Executive MBA (EMBA) class walked into Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.

Though much has changed in that time, our EMBA continues to be a global leader in its field. It is currently ranked fifth in the world by the Financial Times, and first for 'aims achieved' by students. 


From the inaugural class of 2004, to the ‘Best and Brightest’ of last year, our students have consistently excelled in their chosen fields. So to mark this important anniversary, we caught up with two of our inspiring EMBA alumni who bookend twenty years of impact. Mark Carmichael is an internationally renowned mergers and acquisitions advisor from the first class of 2004, and Eleanor Hevey, from last year's 2023 class, leads strategy, global policy engagement, communications and external relations for the Centre for Disaster Protection. Both spoke to us about their time at Oxford Saïd, and how it provided them with the tools and knowledge to help achieve their dreams.

马克:EMBA深刻地塑造了我的观点。置身于一群聪明优秀、积极进取的国际化、多元化的群体中,让我了解不同背景和经历如何塑造一个人的性格和能力。在同一问题上讨论多种合理但不同的观点是很有趣的,我从中获得了宝贵的经验。在学习过程中的各类辩论,和众多教授也和我的同学们,不仅丰富了我的知识,还促使我重新评估自己的一些信念。我还收获了平衡工作、生活和EMBA学习的宝贵经验,并采取了提高个人效率的新策略,这更让EMBA经历给我带来了真正的蜕变。


20年过去了,牛津赛德的EMBA是如何帮助您实现理想的?


事实证明在过去的二十年里,EMBA学位对我实现理想起到了重要的推动作用。除了进一步培养关键的商业技能外,它还为我灌输了深刻的自信,并与牛津赛德这个极具影响力的品牌建立了终生的紧密联系。我发现,EMBA的人脉机会和持久友谊大大丰富了我的职业旅程。此外与教授们的互动学习无疑为我提供了宝贵的智慧和指导。加上独特的“牛津体验”,即使在20年后的今天,我仍然认为攻读EMBA的决定是我一生中最有洞察力和最有影响力的选择之一。


EMBA课程的哪些主题内容在今天仍与2004年一样具有现实意义?


20年过去了,EMBA的一些主题内容无疑仍具有现实意义。对批判性思维、战略分析、领导力和决策的强调,在今天仍然和2004年一样至关重要。在瞬息万变的企业环境中,EMBA课程致力于培养适应能力和创新能力,这一点仍然不可或缺。此外在EMBA学习期间与不同背景、卓有成就的同学们建立的持久联系,至今仍是知识交流和合作解决问题的宝贵资源。


您工作中最有成就感的事情是什么?您对有意从事并购工作的MBA或EMBA的同学有什么建议?


我的职业生涯最有价值的地方在于其丰富的多样性。在与不同行业和地域的企业打交道的过程中,我不断学习并应对各种独特的挑战。指导创始人和首席执行官实现最佳退出,这是他们创业之旅的关键时刻,也给我带来了无尽的满足感。通过二十多年的积累,我已经找到了成功退出的原则和战略,填补了卖方并购领域的空白。制定更有效的退出战略,并向企业主传授退出前的核心要素,仍然是最重要的。对于有志于从事卖方并购的MBA或EMBA候选人,我建议他们深入了解卖方的心路历程,并提供一种有别于行业标准的服务,因为卖方并购的许多方面都存在不足,有必要做出更好的改变。

Mark Carmichael:

How did the EMBA alter or develop your own perspective? 

Mark: The EMBA profoundly shaped my perspective. Immersing myself in an international, diverse cohort of bright, driven individuals showed me how varying backgrounds and experiences mould one's character and capabilities. It was fascinating to engage with multiple valid yet diverse viewpoints on the same issue, resulting in valuable lessons learned. Engaging in debates during lectures, both with professors and peers, not only enriched my knowledge but also pushed me to re-evaluate some of my own beliefs. I also gathered valuable insights on achieving a healthy work-life-EMBA balance and adopted new strategies for personal effectiveness, making the EMBA experience truly transformative. 

20 years on, how did the EMBA enable you to pursue your ambitions? 

The Executive MBA proved instrumental in advancing my ambitions over the past two decades. Beyond the further development of critical business skills, it instilled profound confidence and created a lifelong and powerful connection with the influential Oxford Saïd brand. I found the EMBA’s networking opportunities and enduring friendships have enriched my professional journey. Personal interactions with the professors most definitely offered invaluable wisdom and guidance. Add in the “Oxford experience", and even 20 years after the fact, I view my decision to pursue the EMBA as one of the most insightful and impactful choices of my life. 

Which themes and elements of the programme are still as relevant today as they were in 2004? 

20 years on, certain themes and elements of the EMBA have certainly retained their relevance.  The emphasis on critical thinking, strategic analysis, leadership, and decision-making remains as vital today as it was in 2004. The programme's commitment to fostering adaptability and innovation continues to be indispensable in an ever-changing corporate landscape. Moreover, the lasting relationships created with diverse and accomplished peers during the EMBA to this day, serve as an invaluable resource for knowledge exchange and collaborative problem-solving. 

What's the best thing about your job, and what advice would you give to an MBA or EMBA interested in a career in MA? 

My career's most rewarding aspect is its rich diversity. Engaging with businesses across sectors and geographies, I continuously learn and tackle unique challenges. Guiding founders and CEOs toward their optimal exit, a pivotal moment in their entrepreneurial journey, brings immense satisfaction. Over two decades, I've identified the principles and strategies underpinning successful exits, filling a gap in sell-side M&A. Developing a more effective exit strategy and educating business owners about pre-exit essentials remain paramount. To aspiring MBA or EMBA candidates interested in sell-side M&A, I advise gaining a deep understanding of the seller's journey and offering a service that defies industry norms, as many aspects of sell-side M&A fall short, necessitating a change for the better.

埃莉诺:EMBA绝对改变了我的人生观。它让我有信心承担更大胆的职业风险,相信自己有能力做出更明智的决定,在工作方法上更具创造性和挑战性,并为我的团队和工作注入新的活力。对我影响最大的是,我有机会向来自全球各地、具有不同专业和文化背景的领导者们学习。这确实对我提出了挑战,让我考虑转换视角,调整我的预设和偏见,并进行更多的自我反思。从其他行业和专业领域以及专家学者那里学习到的前沿见解非常宝贵,为我提供了一个全新的工具包。 


EMBA如何帮助您实现自己的社会影响和可持续发展目标?


在过去16年的职业生涯中,我一直致力于解决全球最紧迫的可持续发展和社会影响挑战。EMBA为我提供了商业核心知识和领袖能力的基石,使我能够采取下一步行动,在以目标为导向的行业内推动变革,通过提高效率,更好地促进与私营部门的合作,并采用创业方法来推动影响力。


在EMBA学习期间,您学到的最重要的东西是什么?


终生学习是一个旅程,敢于向前一步、向他人学习,并对新想法和新可能保持智力开放、充满好奇!


您认为女性在商界取得进步最大的领域是哪里?


很高兴看到更多的女性领袖和新兴女性领袖在我所从事的气候政策领域担任高层和首席职位。但是,要充分认识和解决性别薪酬差距、以及在工作外女性更有可能承担不成比例的照顾责任负担,还有很多工作要做。提供灵活岗位和工作时间虽然关键,但也可能会阻碍女性的发展,让她们以为兼职工作才是解决之道,从而进一步加剧薪酬差距。我努力支持我自己团队中的女性管理者在不影响全职工资的情况下,灵活地安排她们的工作,或重返校园攻读更高的学位和获得更多的专业资格。我们还需要做更多的工作,找到多样、平等和包容的其他方面,并确保取得更加公平的进展。

Eleanor Hevey: 

How did the EMBA alter or develop your own perspective? 

Eleanor: The EMBA has absolutely changed my outlook. It has empowered me with the confidence to take bolder career risks and feel better equipped to take informed decisions, be more creative and challenging in my approach and bring fresh energy to my team and work. The greatest impact has been the chance to learn from an incredible cohort and community of peers – leaders from such a diverse range of professional and cultural backgrounds from across the globe. This has really challenged me to consider switching my perspective, integrate my assumptions and biases and be more self-reflective. Learning from leading-edge insights from other sectors and professional disciplines and from the expert faculty has been invaluable and provided me with a whole new toolkit. 

How did the EMBA help to drive your own social impact and sustainability objectives? 

I have dedicated the past 16 years of my career to addressing the most pressing global sustainability and social impact challenges. The EMBA provides me with the grounding in the business fundamentals and in leadership to take the next step in driving change within the purpose-driven sector to be improve effectiveness and to better foster partnerships with the private sector and bring entrepreneurial approaches to drive impact. 

What was the most important thing that you learnt during your EMBA?  

That lifelong learning is a journey, to lean-in to learning from others and stay intellectually open and curious to new ideas and new possibilities! 

Where have you seen the most progress for women in business and what more needs to be done? 

It’s great to see more women leaders and emerging women leaders working in senior and C-Suite roles in the climate policy space in which I work. But there’s much more to be done to fully recognise and address the gender pay gap and the disproportionate burden of caring responsibilities outside work that women are more likely to take on. Flexibility in roles and approach is key – but can also serve to hold women back in assuming the fix is to work part-time, which again contributes to the pay gap. I work to champion the women I manage in my own team to have the flexibility to fit in their commitments or return to study for higher degrees and further professional qualifications, without compromising on a full-time salary. More also needs to be done to acknowledge other aspects of diversity, equality and inclusion and ensure progress is more equitable.

The Oxford Executive MBA is a transformational programme, taught in a world-class university, that will sharpen your knowledge and experience to act as a responsible leader in a rapidly changing world. Designed to be both intellectually challenging and practical, the Oxford Executive MBA consists of 16 -18 week-long modules (depending on your choice of electives).
