On December 7, a Chinese female tourist experienced a shocking accident while riding a train in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The woman had leaned out of the train’s door to pose for a video, asking her friend to film her. However, she failed to notice the surrounding hazards and was struck in the head by a tree branch, causing her to fall off the train.
Fortunately, the tourist landed in a bush, escaping with minor scratches. Local police confirmed that she suffered no major injuries but emphasized the importance of observing safety precautions while traveling.
Sri Lanka, often hailed by travel magazines as home to the “world’s most beautiful train routes,” attracts numerous tourists keen to experience its scenic railway journeys. The two most popular routes include the “mountain train,” which winds through lush tea plantations, and the “sea train,” which appears to float above the ocean.
However, the charm of these routes comes with significant risks. Many online travel guides and social media influencers romanticize the idea of “hanging” off the sides of Sri Lankan trains for picturesque photos and videos. This practice, though visually stunning, has led to numerous accidents.
Sri Lanka’s trains are known for their outdated infrastructure, open or missing doors, and overcrowded conditions. Incidents involving tourists falling while attempting daring photo stunts are not uncommon.
In 2016, a Chinese woman tragically lost her life after falling from a train while posing near the door. Two years later, another Chinese tourist sustained severe head injuries in a similar accident. Just earlier this year, local media reported multiple cases of foreign visitors falling while attempting risky photo stunts on moving trains.
The recent accident has sparked heated discussions on Chinese social media. Many netizens expressed concerns about prioritizing social media fame over personal safety.
One user commented, “Why risk your life for a video? No amount of likes or views can replace your health.” Another remarked, “Sri Lanka’s train system is beautiful but dangerous. Travelers must stay cautious and respect local conditions.”
Some users criticized influencers for promoting unsafe practices. “These so-called travel guides glamorize risky behavior without warning about the consequences,” one wrote.
