Uniting aspects of Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and color field painting, Bernard Frize’s experimental canvases often feature vivid, interlocking forms. Frize approaches his paintings with strict, near-mechanical processes and palettes; the artist is interested in the intersection of rigid systems and intrusions of chance. Some works are made by groups of choreographed assistants who paint in unison, while others feature layers of peeled skins from open pots of paint. Frize has exhibited in New York, Tokyo, London, Paris, Vienna, and Los Angeles. His work has sold for six-figure prices at auction and belongs in the collections of the Tate, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museo Reina Sofía, the Centre Pompidou, the National Museum of Art in Osaka, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
