Scientific Assessment for Clear Objectives at Each Stage

We adopt a variety of assessment tools 

to measure our students' English proficiency and potential with metrics ranging from listening and reading to thinking and expressing.

For instance, we use the widely acclaimed 

Accelerated Reader software 

to test students' reading comprehension.

Meanwhile, Pearson's Global Scale of English 

helps our teachers quantify students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Pastoral Care, an important element of our full-boarding system, complements assessment by providing teachers with a comprehensive understanding of students' preferences, 

strengths and weaknesses,

so that they can tailor learning strategies and 

goals to each student’s needs and

motivate them to continuously progress through personalised lessons that are both fun and challenging.

Teachers will choose the iGCSE target level that matches a student’s English language ability to progress steadily and systematically from Grade 7 to Grade 11.

Four Great Tips for 

24/7 Language Learning

In addition to Accelerated Reader learning strategies,

students are often encouraged to carry books 

with them to read throughout the day,

and special reading classes are offered for students with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Full-boarding students are able to enjoy our library's rich collection of English books to their hearts' content.

Each week, we also select 'Readers of the Week' 

among students and staff to celebrate those who have read the most books from the library, encouraging more to flip open books for more knowledge, wider horizons, and sheer enjoyment.

Speaking is a perfect example of ‘practice makes perfect’. Conversation in English is a standard part of full-boarding life and classroom communication.

Besides group discussions, surprise questions and ‘Think, Pair, Share’ (i.e. ‘independent thinking - paired dialogue - class sharing’) oral exercises,

students also have plenty of opportunities to prepare or improvise speeches and discussions,

developing their English thinking and speaking skills, as well as their confidence and ability to work together!

Our Debating Club, for example, has been researching controversial issues on a weekly basis, honing their preparation skills by debating entirely in English.

At a seminar last month, 

Grade 9 students demonstrated their geographical 

and English knowledge

by sharing their insights on global refugee issues.

Challenges are inevitable 

along the way of learning English.

This is where personalised ‘catch-up strategies’ can provide effective solutions to students.

For example, teachers encourage students to overcome challenges and gain confidence in learning by

guessing the meaning of words, drawing inspiration from the native tongue, using body language, 

and seeking help from teachers and peers.

Academically, we offer a wide range of 

specialised courses with different focuses 

for Prep and Senior students

combined with Super Curriculum Activities (SCA) to develop their English language skills 

beyond the exams.

Students who need extra support 

with their English learning can also attend

academic intervention sessions on Wednesday afternoons to ensure they can keep up 

with their studies.
