“中英文丝滑切换”是怎样培养的？哈罗礼德学生亲身示范！

In the past, 

a large Chinese and English vocabulary, 

fluency in speaking, and high scores in writing

might have been signs of ‘excellent bilingualism’.

But today’s standards go far beyond that.

At Harrow LiDe, we define outstanding 

bilingual thinking and competence as

‘having a multicultural mindset 

and being able to switch between languages 

with ease in social and academic contexts'.

This means that Chinese and English 

are not just learnt in the classroom, 

but are acquired far beyond.

Students live in a bilingual environment, 

where they can apply what they've learnt 

through the various activities in class –

phonics, library reading, culture and creativity, 

public speaking, etc.

These help to train their bilingual mindsets, 

gain insight into different cultures,

and develop excellent intercultural understanding 

and communication skills.

Since the beginning of their studies, 

Harrow LiDe students receive

personalised and collaborative tuition 

from both Chinese and English teachers 

based on their respective language backgrounds,

and can confidently develop their basic bilingual skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing step by step.

For example, in terms of vocabulary, 

at Harrow LiDe School Haikou,

14 primary school students have entered

the National Spelling Bee finals in May this year!

Their English vocabulary is nearly 5,000 words –

a proud result of Harrow Haikou’s English education.

The emphasis on reading is another integral part 

of the School’s language programme.
 In half a school year, senior students at Harrow Haikou 

read an average of 7.5 English books per person, 

amounting to 25 million words.

Through activities such as bilingual presentations, students at Harrow LiDe School Hengqin are also able to contemplate on their identity, express themselves, and increase awareness of the world's diverse cultures

All Harrow LiDe students see solid bilingual skills 

as something that not only guarantees academic achievement, but also helps them to develop a global vision and unleash the potential of diversity to achieve greater success.

In the recent Joint-School 

AISL Harrow Debate Championship,

Harrow LiDe students demonstrated 

outstanding bilingual debating skills, 

which earned them well-deserved medals.

From the Oral Debate Tournament to the Online Writing Challenge, we encouraged students at different grade levels to follow social issues, and to reason and debate with different cultural backgrounds in mind.

This tests the students' ability to research,  write, and express themselves in Chinese and English effectively, and allows them to demonstrate the intercultural observations and understandings on a daily basis.

The confidence, character, and communication skills they show in these competitions are highly valued qualities when they apply for top universities.
