The Youngest Team Wins the Gold
at the ‘Olympics of Innovation’
The Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, also known as the ‘Olympics of Innovation’, is organised by the Swiss Federal Government and the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
It’s the longest-running and largest invention expo in the world.
This year, its 49th event, features 1,035 inventions from 38 countries and territories,
including top universities like the University of Hong Kong and Tsinghua University.
Led by School Head Dr John Tan and instructor Antony,
our school’s team became the only primary and secondary school representative from the Chinese mainland to participate in the expo!
Facing inquiries from innovation industry titans and leading university representatives, our team showed remarkable composure.
Bolstered by their meticulous research and well-rehearsed presentations, they confidently
discussed innovative research angles and eco-friendly solutions that are closely linked to everyday life.
Their poise and preparation earned them high praise from the judges, making them this year’s youngest gold medal recipients.
The AISL Harrow team’s booth attracted a great deal of attention, notably receiving a special visit from Shiting Wang, the Chinese Ambassador to Switzerland.
The students also engaged in face-to-face discussions on sustainable development, carbon-neutral technologies, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics
with journalists, professors,
and CEOs from around the world.
The chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry took a special interest in the team’s project,
noting its potential application in India due to similar dietary and kitchen waste challenges, which could drive sustainable development.
‘The 24-hour journey to Geneva was filled with challenges, yet the students displayed astonishing resilience and teamwork. At the expo, they communicated fluently in English with participants from various countries, confidently displaying their talents and promoting a positive image of Chinese students. Their performance made us all incredibly proud.’

1) 减少填埋食物垃圾;
2) 在充满学生的教室中释放更多氧气,吸收更多二氧化碳,使学生的思维更加清晰;
Antony

How was the gold medal-winning
idea developed?
Secret1
360° STEAM Empowerment
Inside and Outside the Classroom
Our students don’t rely on rote learning or memorising formulas.
Instead, they actively participate in the School’s diverse, inquiry-based CCA activities,
enhancing their STEAM skills
both in academics and in daily life.
From ICT and general studies in primary
to science in secondary,
students step out of the classroom to engage in tech-forward activities like AI programming, scientific inventions, and aeroplane design.
‘Teamwork’ across disciplines elevates their love for innovation and their knowledge and skills,
enabling them to excel in STEAM competitions and exams and develop their talents confidently.
Secret2
Translate Daily Observations
into New Innovations
We don’t believe that technology is impersonal; rather, it should enhance people’s lives for the better.
This year’s gold medal-winning idea from our students – ‘Eco-Algae Digestion Technology for Kitchen Waste Recycling’ –
is a good example of how the School encourages our students to be more observant in daily life to seek solutions to real-world problems.
‘Every day, hundreds of teachers and students dine at our school, making kitchen waste a big issue. What can we do about it?’
To address this everyday issue on campus,
the School team came together to brainstorm solutions, sharing responsibilities and overcoming a host of challenges.
✅ Refined the composition of kitchen waste to maximally stimulate algae growth
✅ Stayed patient throughout various trials
✅ Delved into algae ecology to understand the best growth conditions
✅ Considered practical applications of their invention
Under the expert guidance of their teachers,
they discovered a viable method
for repurposing kitchen waste.
Let’s hear it from them –
At the School’s cafeteria, the kitchen waste typically contains about 40-50% carbohydrates, 5-10% protein, and 10-40% fats. These nutrients can feed microalgae, which then produce oxygen through photosynthesis under sunlight or UV light.
This technology could bring three potential benefits to humanity:
1) reducing the volume of food waste going to landfills;
2) increasing oxygen release and carbon dioxide absorption in classrooms, enhancing students’ cognitive ability;
3) contributing to environmental greening by growing green algae from kitchen waste in transparent tubes.
This exhibition not only showed us the cutting-edge of global technological progress but also deepened our understanding of the crucial role innovation plays. Throughout the event, our students asked many questions and thought up more ideas. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn brought us great comfort. I believe this experience will inspire them to pursue their dreams with even greater determination in their future studies and life.’
– Antony, instructor
Since opening in September last year, our School’s students and faculty
have achieved great success in
two major international STEAM competitions in just over half a year.
We believe this is just the beginning.
Looking ahead, we anticipate our students will continue to strive for excellence,
