A Chinese influencer with over 400,000 followers was arrested after fabricating an emotional story of being a single father working as a food delivery rider to support his young daughter. The man, identified by his Douyin handle @qianyibaobei, used this false narrative to gain online sympathy, boost his popularity, and profit from live-streaming sales.

In his videos, the man frequently portrayed himself as a devoted father to his toddler, Qianyi, whom he claimed to bring along on food deliveries because her mother had abandoned them. Prominently displayed in his videos were captions stating, “She does not have a mother.”

In one widely shared video, he donned the yellow uniform of food delivery service Meituan, claiming to have completed 43 orders in a single day while caring for Qianyi. He said his earnings of 300 yuan (US$40) would help provide better food for his daughter. Additionally, he claimed to have accidentally injured her face during one of his shifts, further tugging at viewers’ heartstrings.

This fabricated narrative resonated with many online, allowing the influencer to produce over 100 similar videos and amass a substantial following on platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou. His content generated significant profits through live-streaming sales, all under the pretense of providing for his daughter.

However, on December 3, police exposed the truth. Contrary to his claims, the man was neither a delivery worker nor a single father. In fact, Qianyi’s mother was found to be living happily with both of them. The delivery uniform he wore in the videos had been purchased online.

Authorities penalized the man, surnamed Yu, for disturbing public order. While specific details of his punishment were not disclosed, such offenses in China typically carry penalties of up to 10 days of detention and a 500-yuan fine under the Public Security Administration Punishment Law.
