安徽 杨梦

T: So everybody are you ready to start this maybe our fourth class today? Are you ready?

S: Yes.

T: Now, class begins. Good afternoon, class.

S: Good afternoon, Ms. Yang.

T: Sit down, please. Today we will continue to learn Unit 1 Teenage Life. About several months ago, we graduated from junior high school, right?

S: Yes.

T: Yes, and now we are freshmen at senior high school. Do you know this word “freshman”? Is it a man who is fresh? No, actually, it refers to? A student in the first year of high school or university, right? So am I a freshman?

S: No.

T: No, I wish I were, but I am a teacher now, you are...?

S: Freshmen.

T: Yeah, freshmen, and for you freshmen, I’ve got a question: How did you feel in the first week at senior high school? Who would like to share? Can you, please? Hand him the microphone.

The handsome boy. How did you feel?

S: I felt tired but interesting.

T: Tired, why are you tired?

S: I only sleep 5 hours.

T: So you are really really tired. Thank you, sit down, please. Any different feelings? Can you?

S: Maybe I feel a little anxious because we meet everything is new. And we want to talk to some new classmates.

T: So this is a new environment, so you felt quite a little bit anxious, right?

S: Yes.

T: OK, thank you, sit down, please. So it seems that you are facing some challenges now, which means something really hard or difficult. But don’t worry, you are not alone. Next let’s read a new text about an American boy Adam. Let’s see what his life is like? The title is The Freshman Challenge. Now please check out your text book, your text book, turn to page 14, this page. Now please read the text quickly and try to summarize the main idea of the each paragraph. How many paragraphs are there in the passage? How many?

S: Four.

T: So summarize the main idea but how to summarize the main idea? Here is a reading tip. You may focus on the title, what’s the title of the passage? What’s the title?

S:The Freshman Challenge.

T:Yeah, The Freshman Challenge. You can also pay attention to the picture, the picture, who is the boy in the picture? He is...?

S: Adam.

T: Yeah, Adam. And you can also focus on some key words and phrases, or topic sentences. What is a topic sentence? The main idea, yeah, in Chinese is 主旨句. The main idea is usually stated in the topic sentence. But how to find a topic sentence? It is usually the...? Yes, the first or the last sentence of the passage. Now you got it. Please read the passage quickly in 3 minutes and try to summarize the main idea. Go.

T: OK, time is up. Now let’s look at paragraph 1. Who would like to have a try? Any key words are welcome. Can you?

S: I think the first week was a little confusing.

T: A little confusing, why? Why is he confused?

S: Because I am a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge.

T: OK, very good. So we can say? The main idea is maybe “Senior high school is a big challenge.” Thank you, sit down, please. Para 2, anybody? That boy, can you?

S: I think is “I had to think very carefully about which course I wanted to take.”

T: Do you agree with it? Yes or no?

S: Yes.

T: Yes, so you think maybe this sentence is the topic sentence of this paragraph, right?

S: Yes.

T: Thank you, very good, so the main idea is “Adam had to choose courses carefully.” And then para 3, you please.

S: I had to choose extra-curricular activities.

T: Is he right?

S:Yes

T: Yes. very good, thank you. And there is a very difficult word, read after me: extra, extra; curricular, curricular; extra-curricular, extra-curricular. Here extra-curricular activities means after-class activities, like after class I like joining some clubs, got it? OK, and the last para. Anybody? Yes, please.

S: I will have to study harder and get used to being responsible for a lot more.

T: Very good, so the topic of this paragraph is still...? The first sentence, right? Thank you, sit down, please.

T: So, now, we’ve got the main ideas, next let’s get deeper and explore how the text is organized? So is para 1 a general idea of the reading text? Para 1 is the general idea , main idea of this reading text? Yes or no? Do you know general idea? Main idea? Yes or no? Yes, and in para 2, a fact supporting para1. Yes or no? Yes, then what about para 3 and para 4. Are they the same as para 2? Are they the supporting facts? Yes or no? Yes. So the structure of the reading text is 1 general idea and 3 supporting facts. OK, so this is the structure.

T: And before reading the text, we shared our feelings as freshmen, right? Some of you felt anxious, maybe tired but interesting in senior high school. Then what about Adam? How did he feel in the first week at senior high school? One word, he felt confusing or confused?

S: Confused.

T: Yeah, he felt confused, why did he feel confused? Because senior high school is a... ? Yeah, a really big challenge. And what challenges did he face? Now let’s read the text again, answer the following questions and next we’ll explore his challenges together, 3 mins again, go!

T: It seems that most of you have finished, so shall we check the answer now? Shall we? So the first question, what courses did Adam choose? Any volunteer? Can you?

S: Maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese.

T: Very good, very good. Wait a minute. Can I ask you another question?Did Adam choose courses by himself?

S: No

T: No, why didn’t Adam choose courses on his own? Is it easy or difficult to choose suitable courses? Difficult, right? So the first challenge Adam faced might be choosing what? Choosing suitable courses? How to choose suitable courses? How to choose suitable courses? Or who helped him? Sit down, please. Who helped him? The school adviser, and we can also say? He turned to the school adviser for help, right? OK, so that’s the first question. Now let’s move on the second one: Which club did Adam join? Yes, you please.

S: He joined a volunteer club.

T: A volunteer club. Is she right?

S: Yes

T: Yes, I also agree with you. Wait a minute. Why did Adam join the volunteer club?

S: He tried to join the school football team.

T: He tried to join the school football team, but he was?

S: He didn’t play enough.

T: So he was refused, right?

T: OK, thank you, sit down, please. So here we can say his second challenge is joining the school football team or the volunteer club?

S: The volunteer club.

T: The volunteer club? really? His challenge. Yes,  joining the the school football team. And after being refused, did he give up?

S: No.

T: Of course, not. Then what will he do? How to join the football team? He will...? Let’s answer together, he will...? Try to improve himself to make the team next year. And here I have a question about this phrase “make the team” . What does it mean? To set up a team or to join a team?

S: To join a team.

T: Yeah, to join a team. That’s right. And then the last question: What is Adam worried about? Yes, please, hand him the microphone.

S: He worried about that keeping up with others and getting used to the homework.

T: Do you agree with him? Yes, so do I. So he is worried about keeping up with others and getting used to the homework. Then how to keep up with others and getting used to all the homework? What will he do?

S: Study hard.

T: He will get prepared, right? How to get prepared? One point is he study harder. Another point is? He will be more...? Who would like to help him? Maybe the lady.

S: Be responsible.

T: Be more responsible. OK, thank you, sit down, please. Here we can see the last challenge Adam faced is...? Sorry, keeping up with others, and the other one is the homework, right? Do you have any difficulty with homework? And he will study harder in the future and be more responsible. OK, everybody, please look at the blackboard. So now we have found Adam’s 3 challenges and his personal...? Yeah, solutions. Very good.

Then we have learned a lot about him. What kind of person do you think Adam is? And why? Is he confident or not? Please discuss with your partners and voice your opinion. Discuss with your partners.

T: Now time is up. So who would like to share your opinion with us? This lady, it is your turn now.

S: I think is is never give up.

T: He never gives up, so maybe we can use this word, “determined”, do you know “determined”? If I want to achieve something, then I will work hard and try to make it. So I am a determined person. OK, go on, please.

S: He was refused at a football team but he didn’t give up and make the team next year.

T: He didn’t give up, and tried to improve himself to make the team next year, so he is really determined, right? OK, good, very good, thank you. Anybody else? Yes, you please.

S: Adam is a positive person, because on the article we know he met many challenges but he didn’t give up. Now he keep positive to solve any problems, such as he has so many homework, but he will solve it one by one.

T: So you think he is really positive, right?

S: Yes.

T: Very good, that’s really a good point, thank you. What about the student at the back? The girl please? Hand her microphone.

S: I think he is confident because Chinese is difficult but be believe that he can learn it well.

T: Very good.

S: I also think he is kind because he joined the volunteer club to help the homeless people.

T: Very good, very good! Thank you, anybody else? What about the student here? Do you have any idea? Who’d like to share with us? You haven’t shared your opinion, maybe can you please? Yeah, anybody, hand him microphone.

S: I think he is kind of outgoing, maybe.

T: Outgoing. Why?

S: Because he tried to join clubs.

T: He tried to join the school football team, the volunteer club? So you think he is really outgoing.

S: Yes.

T: OK, thank you, thank you, very good, sit down, please. So thanks for your brilliant ideas, I am really impressed, so now we have known Adam’s..., look at the blackboard, we have known his challenges, solutions, and his, maybe his characters, right? Now we have known quiet a lot about Adam’s school life. Then what about you? What challenges are you facing? I have done a survey among over 1000 freshmen, and this is the result of it.

And I think freshmen face similar challenges, so which challenge are you facing? Now please think for a moment and now I want you to a new group, for example, if you want to keep up with others, you can join this group, and if you want to live independently, maybe here, and if you want to make friends, you can join her group. And getting healthier? Getting along well with parents? Yes, please. And keeping hobbies? Now, listen to me, Now, listen to me, please stand up and join a new group. Let’s do it. From here, yeah. ...If there are not enough seats, you can also stand up. Have you found your group? Now, you and your group members are facing the same challenge, right? Now please discuss with each other, and try to find as many solutions to your challenge as possible, and draw a mind map. And after the discussion, the speaker will come here to introduce your mind map. And here is the card for your mind map, the colorful card. For you and for you guys, now, we can discuss with each other. Now please discuss with each other and try to finish the mind map in 6 minutes. Now let’s get started. You can also stand up to discuss with your members. And if you need any help, call me.

T: OK, everybody, so time is up, now. Which group would like to be the first? Can you? I think we should give her a big hand for her bravery to be the first. Let’s give her a big hand. Come here, microphone, I can help you.

S: Hello, everyone. I am getting healthier group’s speaker. Now it is my honor to share our group’s mind map to all of you. Yesterday, I felt uncomfortable, so maybe I have a cold, but have trouble in studying is not a good thing, so getting healthier is the most important wish. We have discussed the solution. Now show our mind map, keep health, maybe we have healthy habits, eat something good for our health. And watch our diet, you know eating unhealthy food is not good for our body, so junk food is not necessary for us. Stay happy, don’t worry what will happen, listen to music maybe will help us feel less stressed out, taking exercises in our spare time, that’s all, thank you.

T: OK, thank you very much, and your solutions are very practical. Thank you very much. Thank you. And another group? Yes, you please, let’s welcome her. Do you need my help? OK, Wow, very well designed.

S: Our group’s challenge is Keep hobbles. We found 5 solutions. First, develop hobbies in the spare time and Two is stick to your own hobbies, balance the time of studying and hobbies, and the fourth one is join club as you like and find some friends who have the same hobbies. Last but not least, it is dig the value of hobbies.

T: So that’s all?

S: Yes.

T: OK, thank you. May I keep it?

S: OK.

T: Since our time is limited, not all groups are able to represent your mind maps. But I want all of us can benefit from your wonderful works, so group leaders, team leaders, please put your mind map on blackboard, come here, thank you. Thank yo very much. So, that’s it. And I want to say: It is really normal that we are facing and will face different challenges on the long journey of life. The most important is that we accept them and face them with courage. And I hope you will be as determined, positive, confident as Adam in the future, and that’s all for today. Last is our homework, don’t forget the self-assessment. Then let’s call it a day. Class is over. Thanks for your cooperation.
