Full Moon10:34 AM on the 18th

WAVES wishes all its readers and followers a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival in advance!

As everyone knows, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the best time to appreciate the moon. This year, the moment of the full moon will occur on September 18, 2024 (the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 17) at 10:34 AM. Therefore, this year, the full moon falls on the 16th day rather than the 15th. However, since the difference in time is not significant and there is no clear comparison, the moon on Mid-Autumn night will still appear almost full and is definitely worth admiring.

Moonrise: 5:58 PM on the 17th

Moonset: 6:02 AM on the 18th

Full Moon: 10:34 AM on the 18th (the later it gets on 17th night, the fuller the moon will appear).

Saturn accompanying the Moon

At 5:58 PM on the 17th, the full Mid-Autumn moon will rise slightly southeast. As the sky darkens, you will notice a bright star closely accompanying the moon above it—that star is Saturn. If you observe it through a telescope, you will see Saturn’s stunning rings.

For observers on Earth, Saturn appears near the moon once every lunar month, a phenomenon known as "Saturn accompanying the Moon," though the distance varies each time. This year, the Saturn-Moon conjunction happens to occur on Mid-Autumn night, allowing us to witness this celestial spectacle of a star and moon together.

Super Moon Again?

This month, the Moon will reach its perigee on the night of September 18th, making the Moon appear slightly larger on the nights of the 17th and 18th—commonly referred to as a "Supermoon." On Mid-Autumn night (the 17th), the Moon's apparent diameter will be about 33′44″, and it will be even larger on the 18th, reaching approximately 33′50″.

In recent years, due to widespread media coverage, the Supermoon has become increasingly familiar to people. In fact, Supermoons are not rare, occurring 2-4 times each year.
