A 42-year-old Chinese man was charged Thursday with murdering a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman in Singapore in a knife attack.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning at a hardware store in Block 210, Hougang Street 21.

The Chinese man, Du Zaixing, allegedly attacked Dao Thi Hong with a knife while she was working at the store.

A 26-year-old manager at the store tried to intervene and was injured. All three were taken to hospital, but Hong succumbed to her injuries.

Du will remain in custody for one week for further investigation, including a visit to the crime scene, according to Channel News Asia.

His case will return to court on Dec. 19. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Hong moved to Singapore from Hanoi five years ago and had been working at the Quan Long Nippon Paint hardware store at the time of the attack.

Her sister traveled to Singapore on Wednesday to perform procedures related to her death.
