Professor Andreas Schlitzer received his doctorate in immunology from the Technical University of Munich in 2012 under the guidance of Professor Anne Krug. He then joined Florent Ginhoux’s research team at Singapore Immunology Network as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2015, Professor Schlitzer obtained the highly competitive Emmy Noether program grant of the German Research Foundation and joined the LIMES at the University of Bonn, Germany. In 2019 he was named the Cluster of Excellence Professor for Biology of Inflammation.
Professor Schlitzer’s research interests focus on mononuclear phagocyte biology and, more precisely, understanding the complexity and function of dendritic cells and monocytes during health and disease. A major focus lies on the developmental processes leading to the functional specialization of dendritic cell subsets and monocytes. To analyze these highly heterogeneous compartments, his laboratory uses state-of-the-art technologies such as single-cell mRNA sequencing, high-dimensional imaging technologies, and advanced flow cytometry. Taken together, Professor Schlitzer's team is investigating how the development of dendritic cells and monocytes shapes their functional specialization during homeostasis and disease. During his career, Professor Schlitzer has published multiple research articles in high-profile journals such as Nature, Cell, Science, Nature Immunology, Immunity, Journal of Experimental Medicine, and others. He has received several awards and honors, including the prestigious Robert Koch postdoctoral award of the Robert Koch Foundation and the prestigious Emmy Noether fellowship.
