Luis Graca received his M.D. from the University of Lisbon, Portugal and Ph.D. in transplant immunology from the University of Oxford, UK. He completed his post-doctoral training first in University of Oxford and later in University of Western Australia. He is currently a full professor of Immunology, the Vice-Dean at the University of Lisbon Medical School, and a group leader at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular.
Dr. Graca’s research focuses in the fields of transplantation and autoimmunity including the regulation of antibody production following vaccination and strategies to overcome transplant rejection and the induction of immune tolerance in autoimmunity and allergy. Dr. Graca’s work discovered the existence of Foxp3+ iNKT cells and T follicular regulatory (Tfr) cells specialized in regulating antibody production.
Dr. Graca is the president of the Portuguese Society of Immunology and the Sociedade das Ciências Médicas de Lisboa, the oldest medical society in Europe (founded in 1822). He also chairs the National Advisory Group for COVID-19 Vaccination. A highlight of his career was the definition of the national COVID-19 vaccination plan, recognized as one of the most successful vaccination programs in the World. Dr. Graca also collaborates with several artists and the artworks developed by artists and the Graca Laboratory have been exhibited worldwide.
