Scope
In 2015, the United Nations put forward the 2030 Agenda, offering comprehensive guidance to nations striving for a better future in environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Since their introduction, significant efforts and widespread actions have been undertaken at the national level to fulfill the vision set forth in the 2030 Agenda, including combating climate change, alleviating poverty, and enhancing public health. While progress has been made globally in sustainable development, it is characterized by considerable variation among countries. Similarly, the degree to which individual Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are achieved also exhibits substantial disparities at the national level. The coming decade is crucial for realizing the 2030 Agenda. Crafting scientifically sound and country-specific pathways for sustainable development is a critical task during this period. This endeavor is essential not only for national prosperity and well-being but also for the overall progress of sustainable development. It is necessary to provide a platform that encourages researchers to delve into this under-explored field, and contribute valuable insights and information to policymakers that can aid in the promotion and implementation of sustainable development strategies. Such research can illuminate a clear roadmap for maximizing national efforts towards achieving the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda.
This focus collection aims to access countries' sustainable development pathways to achieve the 2030 Agenda from heterogeneity and priority perspectives. We invite research that investigates the complex relationship among SDGs at multi-levels, and design country-varying roadmaps for achieving the 2030 Agenda. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Synergies and trade-offs among SDGs
Country-specific challenges and priorities for achieving sustainable development
Empirical evidence of spillover effects of national efforts towards sustainable development
Innovative methodologies for tracking and measuring progress toward SDGs
Role of government and non-government sectors in sustainable development
Role of technology and innovation in sustainable development
