Background and Motivations
This special issue showcases innovative approaches and studies related to developing a Circular Bioeconomy in the Global South. With a focus on sustainable production and consumption, this collection uncover strategies, policies, and success stories that leverage renewable biological resources, promote circularity, reduce environmental impacts and drive socioeconomic development. This collection aims to deepen understanding of unique challenges and opportunities in the Global South, fostering transformative solutions toward a circular and sustainable bioeconomy.
Contributions on the following topics, but not limited to, are welcome:
Sustainable agri-food practices:
· Innovations in sustainable farming and agricultural techniques.
· Integration of circular and bioeconomic principles in the agri-food sector.
Bio-based industries and technologies:
· Development of bio-based products, technologies and industries suitable for the Global South.
· Circular strategies and technologies for bio-manufacturing and processing.
Waste-to-value initiatives:
· Studies of successful waste-to-value projects.
· Technologies and methodologies for efficient biowaste valorization.
Sustainability assessment:
· Development of new indicators to measure and monitoring CBE, with applications in the Global South.
· Quantification of the social, economic and environmental life cycle sustainability.
Business and value-chain development:
· Development of business models and supply chains that allow sustained business activity.
· Governmental support and incentive to create resilient supply chains.
Valuation of the local economy:
· The role of valorizing locally available resources to make bio-based products.
· Developing products and establishing businesses that meet the local needs.
· Challenges, barriers and opportunities for regional bioeconomy strategies.
Community engagement:
· Community-based initiatives in promoting circular bioeconomy.
· The role of local communities in sustainable resource management.
· Addressing the urban-rural nexus in a circular bioeconomy context for a sustainable regional development.
Policy development:
· Analysis of policies promoting CBE in the Global South.
· Comparative studies on the effectiveness of different policy frameworks.
Socio-economic development:
· Social aspect associated with CBE in the Global South
· Economic analysis of the implementation of CBE in the Global South
Infrastructure development:
· Challenges and solutions in establishing necessary infrastructure for CBE.
· Studies of successful infrastructure development projects.
Innovation systems:
· Innovative approaches to circular and sustainable bioeconomy systems.
· Technology-driven solutions for enhancing resource efficiency.
Global South challenges, opportunities and enablers:
· Unique challenges and opportunities in the Global South countries for CBE development.
· Enablers of CBE, including business models, sustainable financing and skills development.
Important dates
· Submissions open: 01 May 2024
· Submissions deadline: 30 November 2024
· Expected publication: Each accepted article in a VSI is assigned a unique identifier and then published in a regular journal issue as soon as available.
Submission guidelines
Manuscripts submitted to this special issue will be peer-reviewed according to the editorial policy of Sustainable Production and Consumption. Papers should be original, unpublished, and not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Instructions for authors can be found on the journal homepage.
