In the heart of a bustling Victorian city, tucked away on a quiet cobblestone street, stood a peculiar little shop. Above its creaking wooden door hung a faded sign that read: Finch’s Clockworks. The shop was famous for its intricate timepieces, each one rumored to possess a touch of magic.

For sixteen-year-old Eliza, becoming the apprentice to the enigmatic clockmaker, Mr. Finch, was a dream come true. She had always been fascinated by the delicate gears and ticking mechanisms of clocks, and Mr. Finch’s creations were legendary.

But the clockmaker himself was a mystery. A tall, wiry man with silver-streaked hair and piercing blue eyes, he rarely spoke more than a few words and was always working on something behind the closed doors of his workshop.

One evening, as Eliza swept the shop floor, she noticed a faint ticking sound coming from a locked cabinet in the corner. It wasn’t the rhythmic ticking of a clock—it was erratic, almost like a heartbeat.

Curiosity got the better of her. She reached for the key hanging on a nail nearby and unlocked the cabinet. Inside was the most beautiful clock she had ever seen, its face adorned with intricate carvings of stars and moons, and its hands glowing faintly in the dim light.

Before she could examine it further, Mr. Finch appeared in the doorway. His expression was a mix of anger and fear.

“You shouldn’t have touched that,” he said, his voice low. “That clock is not like the others.”

Eliza stepped back, confused and a little frightened. “What is it?”

Mr. Finch sighed, closing the cabinet and locking it again. “It’s not a clock, Eliza. It’s a doorway.”
