Special Issue Information
/// WE NEED YOU ///
This special issue seeks to explore the evolving landscape of online communication and behaviour in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) within higher education. While face-to-face classes have been the norm, recent shifts have positioned online classes as a viable and increasingly utilised alternative. Understanding the nature of communication in these digital spaces and factors surrounding them is more critical than ever. We invite contributions that investigate various aspects of online EMI, including (but not limited to):
the types of language and visual behaviour observed in online EMI communications
the needs and perceptions of students, teachers and other stakeholders involved in online EMI programmes
the broader implications of digital transitions in EMI for higher education stakeholders.
This special issue is an open call for scholars exploring the intersections of EMI, digital learning, and higher education to contribute to a deeper understanding of these critical and rapidly changing dynamics.
Additionally, we encourage potential authors to review the twelve trends identified by System editors as 'the future of System' (McKinley et al., 2024; https://doi-org.ezproxy.auckland.ac.nz/10.1016/j.system.2023.103210) and to consider any possible connections between their paper and one of these trends. The twelve trends are:
Themes:
Technology integration
Artificial intelligence and machine learning
Multimodal and immersive learning
Psychological factors
Sociocultural factors and globalization
Neuroscientific approaches
Ecological perspectives and sustainable approaches
Language assessment
Strategies, learner autonomy and self-regulated learning
Inclusivity and accessibility
Policy and curriculum development
Language teacher education
