On December 7, popular Chinese host Da Bing organized a charitable event to distribute free down jackets in cities including Linyi, Jinan, Xi’an, and Changsha. The initiative aimed to assist struggling students and unemployed young adults during the winter. However, the event quickly drew public criticism due to misuse of the aid and the entitlement displayed by some participants.
Da Bing later revealed a disheartening reality about the event: “Out of every 100 people who come for the jackets, only 20 truly need them.” The incident exposed issues of greed and entitlement, sparking heated discussions online.
Among the recipients, some individuals were spotted holding high-end iPhones and wearing expensive shoes while still queuing up to claim the free jackets. Others, after receiving the jackets, complained about their style, calling them “ugly.” To make matters worse, some recipients immediately listed the jackets for resale on second-hand trading platforms, profiting from the free aid meant for the needy.
The situation wasn’t limited to recipients abusing the system. Individuals who arrived late and missed out on the jackets expressed outrage online, accusing Da Bing of "false advertising" and even branding the event as a scam. One particularly vocal critic complained about traveling on a high-speed train to the event only to find the distribution had already ended.
These reactions left many netizens appalled. “Holding a 10,000-yuan iPhone while grabbing a free jacket - what a shameful display,” commented one user. Another wrote, “This is exactly why some people hesitate to help others - because their goodwill is taken advantage of.”
Some netizens also defended Da Bing, praising his good intentions despite the negative outcome. “Da Bing’s kindness is admirable, but sadly, this is a painful lesson about human nature,” one user remarked. Others suggested better management and stricter screening processes to ensure aid reaches those who genuinely need it.
