The recent parent workshop at SLSK2 which is a IB PYP Candidate school, titled "Imagination in Action - The Power of Play for Young Learners," offered an enriching and engaging experience, emphasizing the critical role of play in early childhood development. This time, the workshop was lead by Teacher Mitch and Teacher Richard who shared their knowledge and experience to the parents. Parents had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities with various classroom play materials, mirroring the daily experiences of their children.

Various types of play were explored, each contributing uniquely to a child's growth.
·Motor/physical play, such as running, jumping, and climbing, helps develop gross motor skills and physical health.
·Sensory/manipulative/object play, including activities with blocks, sand, and water, enhances sensory experiences and fine motor skills.
·Constructive play, where children build or create, fosters creativity, planning, and fine motor development.
·Dramatic/fantasy or symbolic play, involving make-believe scenarios, nurtures imagination, social skills, and emotional regulation.
Play is not a guilty pleasure, not a distraction from real word and responsibilities.

Through a series of activities, parents observed how play aids in developing fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and attention span. Examples included building block activity to improve agility and skillfullness, sorting objects to enhance cognitive skills, and role-playing and group puzzle play to boost social interaction and language development.

To encourage play, parents were advised to provide diverse play materials that stimulate different types of play. Creating a safe and inviting play environment, participating in play with their children, and allowing for unstructured playtime were recommended strategies.Emphasis was placed on the importance of allowing children to lead their play activities, fostering independence and creativity.Imitating, imagining and dramatizing allows children to try out new roles and experiment with language and emotions.

Integrating the IB learner profile, the workshop emphasized nurturing children to be inquirers and thinkers by exploring and questioning their surroundings through play. It encouraged parents to help their children become communicators and risk-takers by engaging in imaginative scenarios and trying new activities. Additionally, fostering attributes like being balanced and reflective was highlighted, ensuring children develop holistically through the power of play.
Overall, the workshop reinforced that play is a powerful tool for young learners, integral to their development as knowledgeable, principled, and caring individuals. Parents left with practical insights and strategies to support and encourage their children's playful learning at home, fostering a lifelong love of learning.
