A 25-year-old man, attending a traditional matchmaking session, found himself paired with a 31-year-old woman. But instead of focusing on his intended match, he quickly became captivated by her younger sister.
The man, described as a polite and well-groomed individual, appeared ready for a serious discussion about marriage. His match, a 31-year-old woman with a round face and glasses, seemed like a suitable choice based on their profiles. However, as soon as the man arrived, his attention shifted to her 24-year-old sister, who was also present at the meeting.
The younger sister, dressed more fashionably and exuding youthful energy, caught his eye immediately. Ignoring the older sister, the man directly asked the younger one about her age. Upon learning she was just a year younger than him, he expressed his belief that they were a better match, given their closer age.
This declaration visibly upset the older sister. In an effort to salvage the situation, she openly outlined her requirements for marriage: "To marry me, all you need is a house - new or old doesn’t matter - and a modest bride price of 60,000 yuan. We can even finalize the engagement within a week."
However, the man responded bluntly, saying, "I feel like we’re not of the same generation. Your sister and I have more in common, and I’d prefer to talk to her if she’s open to it."
The older sister, visibly irritated, countered, “You can choose my sister, but the bride price isn’t the same. For me, it’s 60,000 yuan, but for my younger sister, it’s 280,000 yuan. She’s younger and still has her youth, so her bride price reflects that. I, on the other hand, know how to take care of a household. Do you really think you’re prepared for such a high cost?”
Despite the older sister’s reasoning, the man remained firm in his interest in the younger sister. However, upon hearing the steep bride price, he hesitated, realizing he couldn’t afford it.
The matchmaker, noticing the rising tension, tried to mediate by suggesting that the man reconsider. “Both sisters are at a suitable age for marriage. Take some time to think it over. After all, keeping it within the family might make things easier in the future.”
However, the man ultimately decided to leave, saying, “I can’t accept someone older than me, and I can’t afford the younger one. There’s no point in staying.” As he walked out, the matchmaker attempted to convince him to reconsider the older sister, but he firmly declined, refusing to settle for what he called a "second choice."
The incident, which quickly spread on social media, sparked intense debate. Many netizens criticized the man’s approach, calling it disrespectful to the older sister.
"Even if he preferred the younger sister, he shouldn’t have made it so obvious," one commenter wrote. "At least wait until the first meeting is over before expressing interest in someone else. It’s basic courtesy."
Others, however, sympathized with the man. "Marriage is about finding the right person. If he doesn’t feel a connection with the older sister, why force it? Everyone has their preferences."
