The National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) for 2024 concluded in August, marking a significant shift in its format. This year, the NMOS will consist of only one round, featuring 35 questions to be completed within 90 minutes.
Modification 1: Reduces from two rounds to one round.
Modification 2: Increase from 30 questions to 35 questions within the same time limit (90 minutes).
Modification 3: Only children from Primary 5 are eligible to register for NMOS. (used to be Primary 1 to 5).
1. Main Topics in the NMOS 2024 Paper
The topics in the NMOS 2024 paper largely mirror those from previous years. Analysis shows that “Word Problems” and “Geometry Problems” are the most frequently tested categories, covering word application problems with equations, ratios, and for geometry models such as cubes and rectangular prisms.
Example Problem: Below is a sample geometry question from the NMOS 2024 paper that illustrates the expected level of difficulty. Additionally, Kangaroo Study provides a similar practice example in class notes that aligns with the NMOS 2024 format.
Despite the format changes, students currently in Primary 4 can still prepare using the same topics as in prior years. However, time management will be crucial, as the number of questions has increased while the time allowed remains the same.
2. Difficulty Level of NMOS 2024 Questions
2.1 Have the Hardest Questions Changed?
The most challenging topics remain consistent with previous years, primarily focusing on “Word Problems” and “Geometry Problems.” This consistency simplifies preparation, enabling students to concentrate on familiar material.
Example Problem: A challenging word problem worth four marks exemplifies the level of complexity students should anticipate.
Looking ahead, we expect Word Problems and Geometry Problems to remain prominent in NMOS 2025. Key areas of focus may include fraction and percentage calculations, ratios, proportions, and complex application problems.
Given the new competition format, early preparation is essential. Students should thoroughly learn all previously tested topics and adopt efficient study strategies.
