GEP Round 1 has just ended and we wish all students all the best in awaiting the results and in their preparation for Round 2.

To help students prepare for the exam, Kangaroo Study had prepared workshops on Word Problems. These workshops have been our most popular workshops thus far, with 49 students and many parents attending over the span of 3 workshops.

Why did we do a workshop on Word Problems?

After the GEP Round 1 Mock Exam that Kangaroo Study hosted, Teacher Zhang gave feedback that the children’s mastery of word problems is lacking.

Word problems are also the focus for the subsequent NMOS exam.

Many questions in GEP Round 1 are word problems, and some of the hardest questions in GEP Round 1 are also word problems.

Due to this heavy emphasis of word problems, we have chosen to teach word problems to best prepare students for the upcoming exam.

What was taught

during the workshop?

We taught two types of different questions in the workshop, model questions and excess and shortage questions.

Question 1

The yellow ribbon is three times as long as the purple ribbon. The orange ribbon is 3cm shorter than the purple ribbon. A yellow ribbon and two orange ribbons together measure 24cm. How long is the purple ribbon?

For model questions, we can easily solve the questions by drawing the model and identifying if there are any extra parts or shortage parts.

Question 2

Teacher Ang has a set of worksheets for his class. If he gives every student 3 worksheets, he will have 10 worksheets left. If he gives every student 4 worksheets, he will have 2 worksheets left. How many worksheets does he have in total?

For Excess and Shortage questions, even though we cannot draw a model, we can draw out the units as such, so that we are able to label that each unit has the same amount. We can then identify the difference and look for the units.

After every question, our capable assistant teachers will record what was written on the blackboard for students and parents to look through after class. Our assistant teachers are also dilligently writing down notes, and will send a full copy of self-written notes to our Whatsapp Group.

How did students do during the workshop?

Students listened eagerly and paid attention during the workshop.

After the class, Teacher Ang gave homework to the class. Students had to re-do the questions that were not completed, complete the practice questions given, and explain questions to parents. Explaining questions allows students to showcase their understanding of the questions by showing their parents how to solve them step-by-step.

We also conducted an After Class Test to check if students remember what they had learned. Many students did well and many scored full marks, proving that they understand what Teacher Ang had taught.

Discussing with

parents on

homework questions

After completeing the homework, Teacher Ang further helps to explain questions and concepts that they do not fully understand.

He also discusses about children’s learning and study habits with parents.
