Located in Jingdezhen, the millennium-old capital of porcelain, this project was commissioned by a private owner to create a small museum within their office park, showcasing their personal collection of ceramics. It serves as a serene venue for displaying collections and hosting tea receptions for esteemed guests. Situated within the owner's office park, access to the site is through an external elevator. Inside, the space features interlacing beams and columns, with large windows that open widely, offering a comprehensive view in a compact single-level space. Given the spatial constraints of the expansive park area, our challenge was to transform it into a tranquil yet multifaceted exhibition and reception space, while honoring the cultural attributes of the tea vessels. The aim is for this future space to provide rich experiential scenarios – a place for exploration, exhibitions, and receptions. Through extensive visits and research in Jingdezhen, we uncovered numerous stories behind these vessels, revealing a cultural heritage spanning millennia, surpassing the vessels' intrinsic value. Desinger inspiration from the craftsmanship of porcelain making, the designers extracted prototypes from ceramic production scenes. They sought to connect objects with space, conveying subtle spirits and sensations. This small museum is not just a space for exhibiting ceramics; it aims to embody the spirit of ceramics, blending traditional and modern aesthetics into a cohesive space akin to a refined porcelain workshop village. Various spatial prototypes – such as corridors, kilns, workshops, courtyards, and pavilions – are interconnected through diverse pathways, each offering different emotional experiences. Upon entering, visitors encounter a partially obscured wall that veils their view, resolving the disadvantage of full visibility while creating an experience akin to entering a workshop. It serves as an antechamber, where walking through the narrow corridor, stepping over thresholds, and sunlight filtering through gauzy curtains calm the mind.
At the end of the corridor, a large floating square space serves as the central hub of the entire exhibition hall. Contrary to its external appearance, the interior resembles a kiln chamber, with small openings at various angles offering glimpses into other functional areas. Inside, surprises await, sparking curiosity. Above the chamber, starry lights combine with custom transparent pressure discs, creating an illusion of floating ceramic pieces, evoking a sense of mystery.
Rooted in the origins of porcelain production, a workshop structure is embedded within the space. Avoiding mere replication of traditional architectural forms, the design uses readily available iron pipes of varying sizes precisely combined and treated with rustication, presenting a color reminiscent of clay yet clean and simple. This structure imbues the space with a sense of place, accommodating various exhibition forms. Notably, traditional outdoor drying racks have been relocated to accommodate the display of numerous small vessels, earmarked for the owner's private collection—a shelter rich in spatial perception. Quality of space is defined by emptiness. Between the half-wall and workshop, a medium-sized open area is created, lined with exhibits along the walls. Adjacent to the workshop, a massive concrete-cast long table serves as both a display stand on regular days and a tea-drinking area for eight to nine friends when guests arrive. It resembles an open courtyard, offering a relaxed and serene ambiance.
Nestled in a corner of the entire exhibition hall, a small pavilion is perfectly proportioned, offering a retreat for the host and intimate conversations with two or three close friends. Following the workshop's design philosophy, a combination of iron and steel embroidery techniques, along with semi-transparent cloud silk panels, creates a tranquil and hazy atmosphere. Seated inside, everything quiets down.
The space is crafted with intricate and diverse pathways, connecting scenes that vary and transform. These paths embed multiple prototypes of traditional porcelain workshops, correlating scenes with items, aiming to evoke memories through space. Each step and scene resolves the sensation of a small-scale site, enriching the spatial layers akin to wandering through a small village, enhancing perceptual experiences. Integrating the space itself into a cultural exhibition is a vital consideration in this project. This is a miniature Ceramic Village, serene yet perceptual.
