Stem cells and cancer

BMC Biology is calling for submissions on the topic of stem cells and cancer, that explores the intricate relationship between stem cell and cancer biology. In particular, we welcome studies providing new insights on the characterization and regulation of cancer stem cells, the role of stem and progenitor cells of the niche in the propagation of the tumor, and the role of reprogramming in this context, as well as potential therapeutic strategies based on reprogramming or targeting of various stem and progenitor cells. Moreover, studies describing the use of induced pluripotent stem cells for cancer modeling and as a drug discovery platform will be considered, as well as studies on the use of stem cells homing to deliver targeted therapy to tumors.

Neglected tropical diseases

BMC Infectious Diseases is calling for submissions to our Collection on Neglected Tropical Diseases. Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) present formidable global challenges, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations who struggle with restricted access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation. The World Health Organisation lists 20 diverse NTD conditions, including leishmaniasis, chikungunya, schistosomiasis and human African trypanosomiasis. These diseases often develop in impoverished settings, where attention from medical research is often insufficient, impeding the development of robust prevention and treatment strategies. The complexity of NTD epidemiology and treatment, often linked to environmental conditions, can involve vector-borne transmission, animal reservoirs, and intricate life cycles, posing significant challenges to public health control efforts. The burden of NTDs is particularly severe in communities with limited resources, intensifying health disparities and perpetuating a cycle of neglect and suffering, which results in severe health, social, and economic consequences for over a billion people.

Food environments and health

This Collection seeks to highlight the physical, economic, social, and cultural contexts in which individuals make choices about what to eat, including the availability of healthy and unhealthy foods, the influence of marketing and advertising, as well as the impact of policies and regulations related to food production and distribution. By deepening our understanding of food environments’ impacts on dietary choices and health outcomes, we seek to support SDG 2's mission of achieving food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Advances in renal transplantation

For this Collection, BMC Nephrology is looking for contributions that discuss the latest insights, innovations, and technological advancements in the field of renal transplantation, with a focus on optimizing graft outcomes, minimizing complications, and enhancing patient quality of life. Renal transplantation is a medical milestone, greatly improving the quality of life for individuals with end-stage renal disease. This Collection will encompass a broad range of critical topics in renal transplantation research, such as novel approaches to immunosuppression, donor selection and management, advancements in surgical techniques, investigations into long-term graft outcomes, exploration of immunological monitoring techniques, and examinations of ethical and socioeconomic aspects in transplantation.

The rapid growth of technology in the healthcare industry, along with the utilization of big data analytics have created opportunities to revolutionize healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes. However, they also raise significant concerns regarding  data privacy, security and trust. Safeguarding digital health data is crucial to maintain patient confidentiality, protect against data breaches, and establish trust among stakeholders, for example healthcare professionals and patients. This call for papers invites researchers and practitioners to contribute their insights, findings, and solutions to address the challenges and enhance data privacy, security, and trust in digital health.

World Journal of Emergency Surgery is calling for submissions to our Collection on Acute care surgery organization in the world. Globally, the acute care surgery (ACS) system is increasingly seen as a necessary part of a matured healthcare system. However, ACS is still in its early days. Until healthcare systems figure out how to establish a proficient ACS system, the way ACS is practiced will vary widely across the globe. The focus of this topical collection would be to gather insights into how each country organizes its ACS system to best serve its needs, whilst adapting to the usual constraints of manpower, time and resources.
