Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts is calling for submissions to our Collection on Biological Valorization of Lignin into High-value Bioproducts. As the largest natural reservoir of aromatics, lignin has been considered as a promising feedstock for the sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. Recently, biological valorization of lignin has emerged as a significant potential since ligninolytic microbes in nature have evolved “biological funnel” pathways to metabolize heterogeneous lignin. Technological advances in lignin valorization hold great promise for the bioconversion of lignin into bioproducts, which will empower the sustainability of biorefineries and substantially contribute to carbon neutrality target worldwide.

Sleep Science and Practice is calling for submissions to our Collection on Sleep disorders in women or female individuals. The presentation of sleep disorders in women may differ from that seen in men. There is increasing awareness of the role of hormonal changes that affect the onset of clinical symptoms. This article collection will present a more complete picture from in-utero brain development, the microbiome of the infant, pubertal hormonal contribution, pregnancy association developmental changes in the mother, and menopausal transitions to old age. There is some newer research into changes associated with female hormones’ effects during gender transition as well.

Conflict and Health invites you to submit to our new Collection on the social determinants of mental health in populations affected by armed conflict, humanitarian crises, and forced migration. Mental health of populations affected by armed conflict, humanitarian crises, and forced migration is shaped by the social, economic but also physical environment in which people live. Social determinants of mental health may include gender, poverty, housing, access to basic services, environmental health, racial discrimination or social exclusion, to name but a few.

BMC Biology is calling for submissions to our Collection on mechanobiology. This Collection aims to explore how mechanical signals are sensed and responded to at subcellular, cellular, and tissue levels, as well as how biological processes influence the mechanical properties of cells, tissues, and organisms. We are keen to consider interdisciplinary work tackling important topics in biology from different approaches, including structural, biophysical, and computational methods, alongside more traditional cell biological research in different organisms and systems.

BMC Medical Research Methodology is calling for submissions to our Collection on Publication dynamics. Science is not an ivory tower. It is responsive to technical innovation and knowledge advancements, but also to the broader society it belongs to. A certain major event, such as movement restriction policies, the introduction of AI-based technologies, or the implementation of a citation metric, can affect the way research is validated, circulated, and used in the community. Patterns of validation and dissemination of scientific ideas are not only affected by external factors: once a particular claim is made in methodological research, it is usually used by other academics, in several ways that might be quite different.

Sustainability refers to the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time. The recent COVID-19 pandemic, regional conflicts, migration crises, and global warming events such as wildfires in Canada, Greece and Maui have increased our awareness of the fragility of cancer care and cancer research to external threats. These threats are interlinked and are becoming more frequent. Global warming will increase the risk of future pandemics three fold. This constellation of circumstances has prompted the Editorial Board of BJC Reports to make articles on sustainability a feature of the journal. These articles will be linked not just to climate change but also to training and education, public trust, funding; all of which are required for a functioning cancer care and cancer research ecosystem. We invite researchers, clinicians and experts to submit research articles, reviews, perspectives and editorials.

This collection aims to spotlight insights garnered from research across diverse ancestries, encompassing trans-ethnic, multi-ancestry, and cross-population investigations. It will also cover novel methods for analysis of such data.
