Incarnation”
Song Art Museum
2024.06.08-08.11
Wang Yi participated in the group exhibition "Incarnation" at Song Art Museum, presenting his work Jacobine No.4. The exhibition was divided into three chapters, inviting six artists to discuss how cultural imprints and innate perceptions are manifested physically, starting from allegories, through personal perceptions, and ultimately culminating in the embodiment of self-awareness.
Wang Yi attempts to excavate the projections of past or present entities, which may appear on totems of primal beliefs, within natural wonders, in feudal palaces, among the banners of great movements, or in sci-fi movies of the near future. He simplifies these into mere shapes, deconstructing and reassembling them, using meaningless vectors to carry significance and conceal intentions. He expresses this method as a tactful transition, employing "symbolic geometry" as a shell to reawaken perceptions contained within collective memory experiences and assigns new meanings and metaphors within our contemporary societal structure.
Jacobine
The form of morality,
A machine of diligence grand.
The efficiency of kindness,
The judgment of universal love.

Paracezegadi”
Shanghai Film Group
2024.08.03-08.20
Wang Yi participated in SANDGADI group show "Paracezegadi", presenting his work Homage to <the Commentary on waterways>. SANDGADI is a comprehensive creative label with the aim of cross disciplinary synthesis, transformation, and cross-cultural integration. It collaborates with artists, designers, architects, traditional craftsmen, or other cultural workers to achieve joint creation.
Drawing inspiration from hydrographic maps, the artwork Homage to <the Commentary on waterways> by Wang Yi incorporates resin mixed with natural elements like algae, minerals, metal powders, and soil from water bodies. The colors in his work are sourced directly from natural substances or pollutants found within the aquatic ecosystem. In the initial hours of the resin's solidification, differing surface tensions, densities, and chemical compositions among the mixtures provoke unforeseen ongoing alterations in the artist's preplanned compositional forms. Therefore, the artist must continually "manage the waters" to maintain a balance between randomness and structure. Meanwhile, traditional handblown neon lights abstractly deconstruct the forms of rivers and lakes from ancient to modern times, flickering in multiple twists and turns. They mirror the roaming, pointillistic strokes of Eastern landscape painting, poetically merging the ancient and contemporary, as well as time and space, in their sedimentation of colors and shapes.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Wang Yi was born in 1991 in Shanghai, China. He graduated with an MFA from the Oil Painting Department at the China Academy of Art. Currently, he lives and works in Shanghai.
Wang Yi's artistic creations revolve around the abstract expression of urban and natural environments, exploring the transformations in the form, material, and concept of painting. He attempts to confront the rapid production and consumption model through slow-paced, individual manual labor, invoking a contemporary visual appreciation that pays homage to classical art. Wang Yi exemplifies the new generation of Chinese abstract artists, many of whom consciously abstain from overt political or social commentary in their artworks. Beyond pure formal exploration, Wang Yi retains elements rooted in real societal and natural contexts. In his pieces, he repeatedly combines singular structural elements to discuss the social relationships between the individual and the collective, also hinting at the interplay between units and collectives, uniqueness and uniformity within the context of network environments.
His recent solo exhibitions include “Dark Light Bright Night”, AIKE, Shanghai, China, 2020; “Geometry Rules All Phenomena: Wang Yi”, Hive Centre for Contemporary Art, Shenzhen, China, 2018; “Inside and Outside: Claude Viallat & Wang Yi”, HdM Gallery, Beijing, China, 2018; “Yi Ri Guang”, AIKE, Shanghai, China, 2016; “Wang Yi”, HdM Gallery, Hangzhou, China, 2014; “Nothing”, J:Gallery, Shanghai, China, 2012.
