Luka Yuanyuan Yang participated in the exhibition “Pidgin Spectrum: Nonlinear Narratives of Multiculture”, at the Power Station of Art's “Emerging Curators Project 2023”. The “Emerging Curators Project 2023” was staged on two of Shanghai’s iconic urban spaces , presenting the exhibitions “Pidgin Spectrum: Nonlinear Narratives of Multiculture” and “Terrestrial Landing: Planet Candidates”.
The exhibition “Pidgin Spectrum: Nonlinear Narratives of Multiculture” draws inspiration from Shanghai’s history, using the pidgin language “Yangjing Bang English” (When two disparate linguistic civilizations first intersect and when a systematic learning of the other’s language is not yet attainable, a rudimentary provisional language often evolves, termed the “Pidgin Language.”) as an entry point and extending to the cultural integration of today's globalized context. It showcases the identity perception and cultural reflections of a new generation of artists who grew up in this background and delves into broader discussions related to the historical context. These artists anchor themselves at different positions on the spectrum of language evolution, editing and transforming diverse lexicons as witnesses to cultural amalgamation. The exhibition presents a narrative of cultural coexistence, collision, and integration, together forming a complex “cultural universe” story. In this chaotic and diverse space, the interpretation, misinterpretation, and assimilation of different cultures often lead to the generation of each individual's unique “Pidgin Language.”

The exhibited work The Lady from Shanghai of Luka Yuanyuan Yang tells the story of 78-year-old Ceecee Wu. Despite living in San Francisco for her entire adult life, Ceecee Wu has always considered herself as "the lady from Shanghai", so does her 101-year-old mother with amnesia who always muttered “Where is this? Am I in Shanghai?” In this film, Ceecee shares a love journal between her and her ex-husband from Shanghai, the two met each other through a dating website in the millennium and formed a relationship that defeats the obstacle of language and geographical boundaries.

PSA Emerging Curators Project 2023
The Emerging Curators Project (ECP) of the Power Station of Art (PSA) is China’s exclusive development and research project for young curators. Since its inception in 2014, ECP has so far supported more than 40 young Chinese curatorial talents to realize a total of 19 physical exhibitions and 2 virtual presentations. At the milestone of its 10th anniversary, ECP 2023 will leave from PSA's gallery space and venture into the city, facing a more site-specific and dynamic environment. Being part of the City Projects of the 14th Shanghai Biennale, ECP 2023 expects to build dialogues with the theme of “Cosmos Cinema” from multiple perspectives, to rethink the public values of an exhibition through communications with the audience from different backgrounds and professions, and to highlight the role and significance of an “curator” in the public sphere. This year, ECP 2023 will be staged on two of Shanghai’s iconic urban spaces, Shenyu Lane and Sinan Mansion. In particular, “Pidgin Spectrum: Nonlinear Narratives of Multiculture” will be presented at Sinan Mansion-Sinan Time Zone, while “Terrestrial Landing: Planet Candidates” will be presented at Shenyu Lane Building 7.

Luka Yuanyuan Yang participated in the New Taipei City Art Museum exhibition “2023 NTCAM On the Move: Interweaving Travelers”, displaying video works Stephen and Cobyare in Love and Tales of Chinatown. The inspiration behind the name “Interweaving Travelers” is derived from a Chinese idiom, symbolizing the countless travelers as intricately woven pieces of brocade, layer upon layer. The exhibition's concept expands upon this metaphor with the aim of exploring the interconnectivity and complexity of global mobility. The exhibition approaches its discussion from four perspectives, including “tourists/wandering travelers as subjects,” “ways of seeing and the construction of landscapes,” “anecdotes and oddities,” and “relational spaces and communities.” Through the observation, narration, questioning, and construction of contexts in the artworks by the artists, the exhibition hopes to create moments of reflexivity for the viewers. The exhibition opened on 10 November 2023 and will last until 03 March 2024.

Luka Yuanyuan Yang's work Stephen and Coby are in Love records the daily life of Coby and Stephen through a delicate and intimate perspective. Coby Yee, a 92-year-old retired nightclub dancer and icon from San Francisco Chinatown’s golden age, and Stephen King, a man 20 years her junior who has been an experimental filmmaker since the 1960s anti-war movement. They have found an unlikely love in each other through matching outfits, dance, and art. Coby updated Stephen’s wardrobe soon after they started dating, she hand-makes all of their clothes and ensures that they never leave the house without matching outfits from head to toe. Stephen has become Coby’s personal archivist, he creates photo albums and collages constructed from glamorous images of Coby, from the past and the present. As their final performance in Las Vegas approaches, Coby and Stephen start to prepare their last dance on the curtain call.

Another work Tales of Chinatown opens with a walking tour in San Francisco Chinatown: walking into the last surviving theater following the scene from the 1940s film “Lady from Shanghai” directed by Orson Welles; wandering from “Shanghai Low” to “Forbidden City Nightclub” – the camera follows the pace of Chinese American nightclub dancer Cynthia Yee, historians Wylie Wong and David Lei onto a journey across time and space.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Luka Yuanyuan Yang (b. 1989, Beijing) is a visual artist and filmmaker who weaves documentary and archival materials into diverse mediums like film, photography, artist books, installations, and performances, often exploring themes of identity, migration, and memory. Her creative process typically begins with extensive research, but it often takes a turn when she becomes captivated by particular individuals, from a deceased Japanese writer born in colonized Dalian to burlesque dancers in San Francisco’s Chinatown. This affection guides her on a journey between the past and present, during which most of her works take shape. By crafting narratives where fact and fiction coexist, Yang aims to challenge conventional historical interpretations and amplify the voices of forgotten, silenced, or misinterpreted subjects.
As a filmmaker, her work has been featured in The New Yorker, as well as the New Orleans Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, Asian American International Film Festival, and Women Make Waves. Her first feature film “Chinatown Cha-Cha”(currently in post-production) has received support from The Gotham, Doc Edge, Pingyao International Film Festival, Beijing International Film Festival, CNEX, Shanyi International Women's Film Festival, and Aranya Waves Film Festival.
As a visual artist, her work has been exhibited at Centre for Heritage Arts & Textile, Hong Kong; Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai; Power Station of Art, Shanghai; Times Art Museum & Times Arts Center Berlin; Chinese American Arts Council, New York City; Art in General, New York City; Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, Uruguay; M WOODS, Beijing; Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing; G Museum of Art, Nanjing; Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing; OCAT, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen; AIKE, Shanghai; and Modern Art Base, Shanghai, among others.
Luka's artwork was collected by KADIST Foundation. She has received support from institutions such as Asian Cultural Council and Asymmetry Art Foundation. She has also earned numerous international accolades, including BVLGARI Avrora Award (2023); Art Power 100 (2019); Huayu Youth Award (2016); Rencontres d’Arles The Arthor Book Award (2015); Magenta Foundation (2013); and the Three Shadows Tierney Fellowship (2012).
